kevingo24's 72 Gallon Setup

Hello fellow plant lovers! My name is kevin and I am new to the whole planted thing but got really interested in it all of a sudden. This is my 72 gallon (newly planted tank) that i got from my uncle because he upgraded to a 250 gallon whopper. Right now i have some moneywort and some type of sword in the middle, but am hoping to put in many more plants this weekend. Any suggestions on what i should put in there, I myself was thinking more stem plants but any opinions are welcomed.

btw here are some pics, hope you enjoy Last pic is my R/O Unit 32 gallon storage tank, i thought the pic was pretty cool so i added it in there!

That was nice for your uncle to give you his 72g, I love your tank so far! That is one big amazon sword! As for any suggestions, I would probably plant a few more fast growers in there (wisteria, indica, etc ...) I would also go with a nice foreground plant as well.

Man, jump right in with a 72g. I'm jealous ! Lighting, filtering, substrate and initial layout all look good. Better start studying up on fert dosing strategies. Do you have one yet?

Great start!
Brian.

Cool RO setup!! Are you using straight RO or cutting it with tap or adding some additives to restore it? I use RO for my tank because the water in this area is incredibly hard. I am actually considering not using it anymore. I usually use 2 parts tap to 3 parts RO. Keep in mind that you will have to add some KH to pure RO for PH stability when you ad CO2.

Talking

Thanks for the replies guys. Jdinh04 can you believe that i had that amazon sword in my 12 gallon. LOL , my fish were being slowly crushed to death, it look s a whole lot better in this tank. I will def. look into geting seom indica, i love the way they look and also want to try dwarf hairgrass in the front to create a bed of grass, does anyone know if this is difficult to do?

BSS, no i do not have a dosing strategy yet, i believe i can get a lot of my macromolecules from my tap water by doing 50/50 ro/tap. Once they are depleted i bought a fert called leaf zone it had iron and potassium. I might also make an order over at greg watsons, do you have any suggestions on what other ferts i should be using?

Jason, all the water you see in that 32 gallon tank is R/0, im thinking of mixing tap in there too so it is all ready and i cant put it in quickly using my pump, i will start off doing 50/50 and see how that does. Also i am using a ph adjuster for R/O units to keep the ph at a comfortable level, around 6.8. About adding KH, im not sure if i do , i have this solution that is supposed to add essential minerals back to r/o water. I do get funny readings when testing kh, maybe i need to research that area a little more.

Hopefully by this weekend, i will have more plants. I have an angelfish in my 20 gallon that is dying for some space!

btw here is my water specs

pH: 6.8
nitrate:.05
co2: 26ppm
Fe:0
Ammonia & Nitrite : 0
Chlorine: 0
PO4:.5
GH: 8 (Medium-soft)
KH: 17 ( I think I am not testing this correctly)

Dwarf hairgrass can be pretty easy to grow if you have the right setup, by the way is this a bow front tank?

I can't believe that sword was able to live in a 12gallon, I still have a baby one thats still growing!

I don't think so, you'll be fine. How much lighting do you have? I suggest getting pressurized C02 before adding dwarf hairgrass.

im running around 3.61 watts per gallon (4x65watt 10000k daylight)

I also have a 5.0 lb co2 tank with milwaukee reg on it. Its is producing about 3-5 bps)

Here is a pic of my full R/O) setup. The tank is aonly 10 feet away from here and will just pump the water in using my rio 800.

Yeah your setup will work, but I wouldn't start with it right away. Let your tank grow in some fast growers for a few months.

Heres an update on my tank.

Last weekend i broke down my 12 and 20 gallon i had and put all the inhabitants into this tank.

1 Angelfish
1 Pleco
2 Pearl Gouramis

I added 2 clown loaches to take care of some of the snails.

I have only had once death so far, ( a mystery snail) i really couldnt figure out why he died because my water is in good paramaters.

I also got some new plants

rotal indica
ancharis
wisteria- I love this one!

Everything is growing pretty good and did my first trimming tuesday. Im very happy with the tank right now. Does anyone get that sense of accomplishment once you actually got fish in the tank and can just sit back and relax at what you have created?

Here are some new pics. Enjoy!

Wow, that wisteria is really pearling, isn't it? It looks like it still has its emmersed form leaves so the shape may change on you. It's (still) a really pretty plant immersed and grew like a weed for me too.

I really like your massive sword. It's amazing. I rarely see any swords that big.

I'm kind of jealous.

Nice update, I was asking my self "how does he have wisteria?" until I noticed that the leaves were emersed grown. Great tank by the way, I love the amazon sword. I would add some discus if I were you!

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Pia- I cant believe that amazon sword is still growing! I wish I could find the pictures I took of it when I just planted it in my 12 gallon or better yet what it looked in my 12 gallon after it took over the tank!. Its just over a year old and somehow it feels like a part of my family hehe.

Jdinh- I have to agree about your opinion of putting discus in there. They are so beautiful. My lfs has a wide selection to choose from and everytime i go there I end up staring at them for at least 15 minutes. Maybe in the next update you might see a discus picture or two (hint hint).
