A few years back I picked up a 55 gallon long with canopy and stand for 150 bux! What a steal huh? I thought so! Got it home and set it up the same day! Its been an addiction ever since! In my younger years I had a 10 and 20 gallon. I knew having a 55g would be a much more rewarding experience if I could handle it! All was well for years untill I started to slack on maintenance because of work and the addition of college full time. The tank turned into an algae mess.
One day I decided that I could do MUCH better. I went out and bought a T5HO fixture and a 20lb co2 setup and took a crack at live planted! I ordered from Aquariumplants.com, Dave (i believe) is a real nice guy and he hooked me up with more than I ordered! Sounds promising right? Wrong, within 3 months the tank had been worse than ever before. The fish were doing fine but the plants...ohh how bad they looked
! Needless to say my first live planted experience stopped there.
Soon there was hope! In April of this year after MUCH reading and learning I decided to give it another honest effort since I felt I had a better understanding and I had grown up a bit to find everything a little easier to understand! Its now May and the tank has been planted and going well for a solid month now! I did have a bit of a problem with BBA covering my (bought somewhat dead) java moss but its growing back and beating the BBA now! I'd like to share some pics from before the tank was live planted and now to show the amazing improvement live plants can have on a tanks look and health! I'm still learning today but with all the GREAT help here at PT I'm looking forward to a better outcome than my first brush with live plants!
Thanks for reading!
Picture 1: The Horrible state of the tank when I stopped giving it the attention it needed for a while. (fake plants) I believe the green algae cause is having no backdrop near the window!
Picture 2: Hard to tell but there is BBA all over everything (still fake planted)
Picture 3: Tank got a full overhaul. Live planted now first few plants settling in and black back drop put in place. Got my co2 system back up and running and a nice surprise, My co2 tank is still almost full! Looks like i got over a year of co2 supply!
Pictures 4,5,6: A month in and the only problem I have is the green algae. I think it slowly came back from when the tank wasn't planted. Its okay though because my nerite snails are taking big sections of it out by the day! Also my SAE's are taking care of any BBA I missed and what ever is left on the java moss!
All in all I think I'm on the right track now. The whole process of learning do's and dont's was a lot of fun now that I am where I am now! All I can say is be patient and Everything will work out!
And sorry for the crap camera. I had to sell my Sweet Kodak so I'm stuck using an old samsung (and I mean old)
