John's 10g Breeder Tank (7/12/05 - Almost 2 Months Old!)

This summer I have plans to breed a Red Plakat Betta Pair, that I have just gotten. They have been bred once from the person whom I got it from. They are almost 8 months old, and they have produced over 100 free swimming fry. They are conditioned with frozen blood worms!

Here are some photos, you may like to see!

Thats one thing people get mixed up with, plakats are short tail bettas. The first picture is the male, and the second is the female.

They look great, John!

Please keep a journal of your adventures breeding those two little beauties! I am not much of a fish breeder, so I like to live vicariously!

Well, I was going to not breed them since my gold rams kept on laying eggs. But then they spawned 2 days ago, and now I have a nest full of raining fry.

Here are some pictures if you would like to see, they should be free swimming by friday or saturday.

Looks like dad is trying to keep them all up, there are alot on the floor so hes trying his best. They should become free-swimming sometime later today or early saturday morning which I will be doing water changes.

That pretty cool John. How often are you feeding the fry?

Nice progress! Good luck with the babies. No offense, but Betta breeding sucks, because it is a major pain. There comes a point when the babies grow big enough that males will start fighting, and then you have to separate every single male, and put them in their own containers. Soon you will have lots of little plastic cups lying around, and often pet stores are not willing to buy bettas off of you, because they only want adult males.

Good luck anyway, if you get annoyed with them, they make good live food

Thank you for the comments!

cprroy73 - I am feeding them baby brine shrimp and microworms 2 times a day.

Thanks - Yeah its a pain, but its a wonderful experience and worth it. Some bettas go for a lot on aquabid, but i'm not in it for the money. Breeding bettas, my lps is really cool about me bringing in fish so that'll be no problem. A guy who works there also breeds bettas so yeah, I have some resources that I could get rid of the juvies.

Well, my fry are now 1 month and 3 days old. They were hatched May 23rd, 2005. Here are some pictures, they are starting to show coloration and their ventrals are starting to pop out. I will be on vacation for about 2 weeks so hopefully these soldiers could last.

Here is a picture at 1 week old!
