My Office Shrimp Bowl (updated 5/3) now with shrimp and fry!

So after taking a look at all my options I ended up going with a shrimp bowl for my office. The low cost and maintenance sealed the deal and I can always upgrade later.

I pretty much grabbed what I had lying around my house and ended up getting a couple things at goodwill.

So specs are:

1 gallon bowl
1" organic potting soil
0.5" sand cap
14w 3000k CFL (which I need to replace with something else)

1x red tiger lily
3x portions of ass. moss
1x drift wood

4/14/12

4/17/12

4/21/12

5/3/12

I tried taking pictures but between the spill from the light and cloudy water its a pretty damn hard to take a decent picture.

Needless to say I need a new bulb and fixture. I am just going to prowl goodwill till I can find something with enough height So I can point it directly above the bowl. Also will need a bulb with 6500k.

How is my bioload? I plan to pull the moss out once thing get settled. I was want to add a foreground, maybe chain sword or something else low. I figure when the lotus completely takes over ill get a larger bowl.

I think I'll wait a couple weeks before introducing any livestock or at least until water parameters look good. I'll keep it updated.

Great looking bowl so far. Can't wait to see the outcome. What you gonna keep in there? RCS?

Thanks! RCS or a Betta but I'd rather not run a heater so probably just RCS. Hopefully it will be ok with the light off for a couple days, need to get a timer from home before I leave the light on over my weekend.

i'd definitely do the RCS... less bioload, plus not cruel to keep them in a gallon bowl. it's generally not a good idea to keep a betta in anything less than 3 gallons, if not 5.5...
lights off with just moss should be okay, not sure about the lily.
6500K, 13 watt CFLs can be found most anywhere, look for the ones that say "daylight" :P\

oh, and great setup so far- what kind of driftwood is that?

heh, ass moss... yeah I grow it my self . Its just two portions of Xmas moss and one portion of Java.

Yeah I would feel bad sticking a betta in a 1 gallon. I've got one in my 20 and he loves to explore. I'm going to hit up home depot in a bit a get a good bulb. Not really sure on the driftwood, it was just a random piece I had lying around. When I get back in the office on Tuesday we shall see how things are going.

RCS would be my choice for a bowl. Since it's only 1G, I'd only put about 10 in there. If you need any RCS, let me know. I can ship you some

I will probably take you up on the offer in a couple weeks. Hopefully things will come together by then. Picked up a 13w 6500k CFL so should be setup on Tues when I get to work.

Well I came in today and was pleasantly suprised by the state of the tank. Water looks nice and clear, plants are not dead... I tossed in a couple pond snails and they are currently fast at work. Little film on the water surface but its not to bad.

I put in a 13w 6500k CFL and brought a timer from home. Any ideas on what my photoperiod should be?

Also I want to get rid of the moss in the front once the tank is cycled. Do you think I could get away with a carpet of some kind? I thought I could temporarily dose DIY co2 untill the carpet fills out then pull it.

Here are a couple shots from top and bottom.

It's looking nice! Can't wait to see progress. I'm glad the water cleared up as well.

You were asking about photoperiod in an earlier post... mine is at 8 hours for my bowl (2:30pm-10:30pm)

Got some more plants, I figure I'll leave it alone for a couple weeks and see how things progress. I stuffed the moss into the back, added chain swords to the front and some water sprite as a floater.
