~2 gal cylinder

I plan to house either cherry shrimp or a Betta in it since the betta I last had for 5 years just died.. The only thing keeping me away from the shrimp is i have a derimmed 20L i plan to make a Iwagumi in the summer

So the other day i picked up a glass cylinder thats approx 10 inches high by 9 inches in diameter, it was too good to pass up for the 13$ it cost me..
The tank is set up for 24 hours so far and here is how it is set up,

The substrate is 1/2" of topsoil in the middle than Capped with Play Sand, but its kind of mixed in some spots but no dirt showing on the top.

The attempt is to grow a carpet of Micro-sword along the edges with a nice piece of driftwood in the middle
Than I took a decent amount of Wisteria buds I guess you would call it that float on the surface to give it a balanced green look for now..

I am attempting this with regular lamp with a LED bulb in it and we will see how it goes, I could always make switch over to CF but I want to experiment with the LED

I defiantly think the piece of driftwood I currently have in it is way to big for it and actually dwarfs the size of the tank.. but here it is as of now.

I went a Tad crazy taking pictures of a simple little tank but oh well

Critics welcome!

Hell ya that's an awesome look for that! I like the idea of thinking outside the box!

The unfortunate part about this setup is I will most likely not have the time to watch over it a lot so everything I do with it is hopefully not going to lead to issues. I don't have time because I'm a college athlete in season.

So in a way it's pretty fortunate because I defiantly will not throw the cherry shrimp in too early because I cannot wait any longer. I'm stuck waiting til later in spring.. so the tank will hopefully be all developed and ready for my little critters.

Somebody chime in with comments of either positive or negative nature... I'm eager to see what people think about it since it is my first tank journal and first tank I'm starting with some planted tank knowledge.

Just because its dirt doesn't make it low tech

its been a while, did some testings, driftwood is a smaller and better piece and want to upload pics soon but busy with redoing of room..

Planaria are everywhere on the glass,
The wisteria buds are reproducing rapidly and not much in the microsword but its going, looking to do little maintenance so i dont want to dose or anything.. just want to let the top soil do the work. im being patient with it

ph is in 6.0 range
ammonia is skyrocketed and is at the 4.0+ range
nitrite is 0ppm
nitrate is 0ppm

not going to do anything about the ammonia, just gonna see what happens since i don't plan on stocking this soon. Busy with college and lacrosse so waiting is indefinite.

I like the wood, why don't you plant it with moss or something?

really nice! it would look good with java or christmas (or any type really) moss tied on, but it's not totally necessary. both RCS and amano are pretty hardy. i would just add a couple more plants now to help the water parameters stick where you want (at least i think that'll help). as i said before, you've got a pretty neat set up!

I decided to remove the drift wood and put in my 29 gal along with another peice.. I moved water level to about 1/4 the way from substrate to try and get the microsword growing a bit more and hopefully to cover entire floor.
