I gave this tank to myself as a gift. I wanted a tank with very little maintenance (hence mosses), and an open top that would humidify my room in the stale El Paso air. I made most of the components but still ended up spending on a G on this tank. I have problems.
Lighting: Current Satellite Freshwater LED+
Filtration: Eheim 2215
CO2: GLA Atomic V2 with $30 upgraded needle valve. Using Atomic diffuser and bubble counter with integrated check valve.
Substrate: ADA Aquasoil, Caribsea supernaturals white sand.
Flora: Needle Leaf Java Fern, Singapore moss, Mini Pellia carpet (future)
Fauna: CRS (future)
I made the tank out of starphire glass (28"x16"x12" tall)
The stand is pine and white glossy formica. I used soft closing drawer slides.
The backlight is a single module Ikea LEDberg on a timer.
I made the lily pipes out of acrylic pipes, using silicone tubing and a heat gun.
I bought a WeMo so I could turn the lights on and off from my bed with my iphone.
I love the Satellite LED+ fixture. I thought all those dynamic features were silly, but it's relaxing to play around with the color before I go to sleep. I took out the pigtail legs, spray painted the middle, and snipped the wire for the receiver and soldered it to make it shorter. I suspended it from an Ikea bookshelf with fishing line.
*Update: the satellite plus broke- it wouldn't stop blinking so I just mounted some LED par 38s. I like not having a fixture directly over the tank, but I can see the LEDs from my bed and it's a bit too bright.
The tank is currently cycling. I'm looking for a good deal on a lot of mini pellia. Does anyone have a lot they'd be willing to let go for cheap? I've already spent $50 on MP but kept killing it during the dry start.
I used an American DJ as the electrical control center.
I think I'm going to put a scape in this quarantine tank. Are there any plants that do well in high temps?
I'm happy with how the lily pipes turned out, but they are very hard to clean. I bought a trombone cleaning snake, but I have to take a lot ridiculous measures to prevent my drain pipe from siphoning.
This is what I see the first thing in the morning:
Playing with the Satellite LED:
Videos of the lightning (it's much better in person. And when it's raining outside, heheh):
1st Planted (fluval edge):
My mother dropped a glass on it and shattered the top, so I converted it with some DIY Leds.
But in the end I converted to the dark side (cycling):
In case you're wondering why all my tank stands are white haha:
I'll be posting some things I learned from my DIY when I have some time. I pretty much learned everything from these forums so
Thank you everyone!
