Caton's riparium - El Rio Feo

Hello!

I started my 20g high riparium a couple weeks ago; the riparium could not have been done without the help of AzFishKid who gave me the planters for my birthday.

El Rio Feo simply means 'the ugly river'. While it may be ugly right now; I hope it turns into El Rio Bonito; The beautiful river.

Fauna:
  • 6 guppies (or endlers? They are N class....)
  • 9 pgmy cories
  • 5 Amano shrimp
  • 10 RCS

Plants:
  • Blyxa japonica*
  • Alterthanera reinckii**
  • Cryptocoryne wendtii 'tropica red'***
  • Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Mi oya'**
  • Dracaena marginata 'tricolor'**
  • Pilea 'moon valley' **
  • Pilea grandifolia **
  • Chlorophytum comosum 'Varigated bonnie'
  • Bacopa salzmannii**
  • Pogostemon stellatus 'narrow leaf'
  • Subwassertang**

* underwater
**Above water
*** Both emergent and submersed

Please excuse my absolutely crappy photos, the colors are all washed out.

(The least colorful ones always want to be the star...)

These show a resemblance to a honeycomb catfish; at least in cuteness

That's looking good so far Caton! You have some nice plants in there.

The Draceana is one that you might not get real good results with. That is not a true water plant, so it might not root in the planter. If it flakes out I would suggest replacing with one or more of the larger crypts or maybe a small peace lily.

Thanks!

I figured as much with the Dracaena, however its always fun to try! If it melts, I will replace it with something, but until then, I like it. I kept it with great results before in my 15g emersed before I ran out of space for it.

Hey Caton, that's looking nice!
I haven't had much luck with Dracaena in my riparium, but hopefully those will do well for you. If not, you can always swap them out.

Nice pygmy cories... though they're not nearly as cute as honeycombs.

You know what could go well in this setup are those Aglaonema simplex and A. minima that gordonrichards just got with his import. I bought some from him and they are really cool plants.

Those would be cool plants to go in this tank. Maybe if the draecana doesn't do well, I can replace them with those.

The draecaena was growing so good, I gave it a trim! It might be a good riparium canidate after all

Not only that, I got my first riparium flower! The pilea grandifolia flowered

I didn't even know they flowered. I mean, I know its a plant that flowers, its just not something people talk about flowering. Is it so common there is no use saying it flowered? Either way, I am happy

Lol, thanks! It will stay El rio feo for awhile. Azfishkid told me that I would hate the riparium at times, and love it at times. I was hating the tank until I saw the flowers. It certainly is a tank that is challenging.

Picture time!

Pilea flowering

Got 8 CRS from geniusdudekiran

FTS (UGLY UGLY UGLY TANK! )

it is moon valley. I was saying it was the grandifolia. I was like: "didn't you send me the stuff?"

Yeah, its a great plant. Check out your local walmart that has a garden center. They almost always have it.

All the CRS are dead

I have no clue what the issue could be. This is the last time I ever buy CRS. Fourth time I have tried them and they all die on me. If I do ever try them again, I will do it in a shrimp only nano tank.
