I see what looks like a ugf. If so dont waste your time using it especially with laterite. You will have a soupy tank regardless of how many waterchanges you do. A ugf is a bad idea in a planted tank as it is but if you put in laterite it would just be a mess.

For a start plant it with lots of plants. Use lots of stem plants in the beginning to avoid algae problems.

Haha, well thats funny. After i posted i took a good look at it and it looks just like a hydrosponge filter minus the sponge. Ive got one also, anyways do you plan to put the sponge on it. Gotta give ya credit from a first glance it sure does look like its a ugf but its not .

If you do fill it with water and put some light over it, I would suggest some aquatic plants. Crypts... definitely crypts

nice one Wasserpest! I agree, maybe some water and lights would help. Just trying to help get you started! I like the shape of the tank though, really cool!! Should Make a great tank for some foreground plants if you have any!

How about just planting pygmy chainsword, no hardscape at all. Just a lawn.

With little crypt hills here and there.

But seriously, hardscape (or lack there of) + substrate depth(s) dictates the lay out-- and should be deeply considered.

Have you put the laterite in yet???

I would just add the laterite and mix it with the sand you have in there right now and then cover the whole mix with another 2" of sand. This will give you your laterite and also a deeper substrate for a good base for root growth.
