75G medium tech dirt tank

I have had a 75 gallon Malawi tank for the last 4 yrs. My first real tank.

Started off like this

I added some plants

time goes by

here it was a couple weeks ago

Growth was SLOW at less than .5 watts per gallon by algae free. I had pretty much reached the end of the line with this tank. Fish were breeding like crazy and fry survival was high due to all the hiding spots the plants provided. I had 26 fish in there most 3-5" in size, and did not want to keep taking apart the rockscape to catch fish. Plus I had grown to prefer planted tanks.

I took everything apart and sold the fish to the LFS...managed to get $180 store credit for them. Having had good luck with miracle grow organic under flourite in my 65g I decided to do the same with this tank.

Equipment:
48x18x21 tank
SINGLE bulb hagen glo T5H0
2x T5NO
eheim 2217
pressurized CO2 20lb
miracle grow organic soil under black flourite

Plants:
dwarf sag
java fern
red tiger lotus
cabomba
ludwigia glandulosa
sunset hygro
hygro cory
ludwigia cuba ?? (was told)
taiwan moss

12 rummynose
12 harlequin rasbora
2 amano shrimp
2 bristlenose pleco

Here it is 1 month after the rebirth. None of the stems are "set" placement wise. The java fern to the left of the driftwood is going soon as I grow out some more stems. What I want is a dwarf sag carpet, crypts midground, sloping stems right to left with more open foreground on the left corner.

I am dosing EI but stepped it down to 40-60g because my light is not high and I have a dirt substrate.

My CO2 is "no frills" just a bottle, reg and manifold. I run it 24/7 with no problems.

I am using a hagen ladder gasp! I know, I know, but it works better than u think. Keeps my 4dkh drop checker green no problem.

Thanks for looking.

Can anyone tell me if that is ludwigia cuba ? on the far right infront of the cabomba. LFS didn't have it labeled, when I asked the clerk thats what he said it was...looks different than google images. Lower leaves are red, don't know if that is die back as they were bunched very tightly when I got them.

Rainy day....trimmed the cabomba and replanted the tops, same with the sunset hygro.
Tiger lotus is going crazy in 1 month has gone from 1 plant to 3.
ludwigia cuba is perking up(really like this plant)
ludwigia glandulosa is hanging on, barely. Root growth but no leaf growth.

Thanks.

I loved the malawi tank...had a hard time deciding to break it down, but I enjoy planted tanks more now.

I sold the large java fern that was left of the driftwood, moved some stems around but not really happy with it. I think one of the varieties of hygro needs to be replaced with something for more contrast.

Some stems were suffering due to being too densely planted so I thinned them out. The topped cabomba sure does take its sweet time sending out a new shoot.

Still learning and having fun...

(fingers crossed) so far this tank has been almost totally algea free.

Toying with the idea of adding some more flow as the plant mass increases, currently just the 2217 but for now everything seems ok.

Thanks for the compliments.

Well, I finally finished my stand. Put the doors on and painted it.

Not the best pic of the tank but shows the color of the stand

In the dark

Also I added a hydor koralia 550 for circulation...still messing with the best placement to not blow the stems to a 45deg angle LOL.

Added some rotala wallichii. Seeing how it grows before I decide were it belongs in the tank.

Also, I have special ordered some Marsilea hirsuta from the lfs to try out in the foreground instead of the dwarf sag.

Head on FTS
