Post Nuked and re-starting the 10g planed tank

Hello All

I always have been interested in aquarium and finally made the jump last May 2010. Since then I had some minor success and many failures. My last planted tank lasted about full 6 months with some degree of success, before I had to go over seas on business trip (for about 2 months). When I came back my tank was nuked with overwhelming algae growth (hair algae). My friend who was supposed to "Fish-sit" never really took care of my tank, he over feed with no water change. Yes his not very dependable. My instruction was at a lost to him. He thought algae boom was normal part of planted tank.
I almost strangled him (sorry now I am venting).

Believe it or not my 7.5 Mr. Aqua rimless tank in my office was in better shape. My co-worker did a great job taking care of it.

Anyhow not all was lost..... to my surprise some of my fish and shrimps had survived.

At the moment I am using this tank as "training pony" if you will. But I want to do it right with no to few casualties and fatalities as possible.

So last month in end of March of 2011, I decided to re-do my 10g planted tank.

So far here is the setup so far:
Tank: general rimmed 10g tank (crappy tank compare to ADA or even GLA tanks). This was "hand me down" from my friend over 15 years ago when I was in high school.

Filter: Aqua Clear 50 and 30 (30 is being used with Tom's surface skimmer)
Yes I have two filters running because there is no such thing as over filtration.

Filter Media: Aqua Clear filter media for 50, 30 is being used with API Phos-Zorb, with active carbon and regular sponge media.

Substrate: Eco-Complete (black) and ADA Aquasoil Amazonia normal type.
I live in NYC and the tap water's PH is around 7.0 to 6.8. With Eco-Complete my tank water came out at 7.6. So i mixed it with Amazonia. Aquasoil is amazing. Now my water is around 6.2. (Not too sure what the long term affect will be like)

Lights: GLO T5 HO 24 inch single fixture with life-GLO T5 HO Bulb (6700k). its on a timer at 9 hours per day from 1pm to 10pm. This is about 1 year old, so i'll probably replace it soon.

Heater: Jager 75 W (well... heater is just a heater)

CO2: None but just ordered ADA CO2 74 YA Reg and cartridge
Just got my EL-valve today from ADG
Will most likely upgrade to ADA speed Reg when I get a bigger ADA tank later on.

Plant Care: Seachem Flourish, Excel, Iron, Nitrogen, Potassium, and Trace

Will update later with pictures and other developments

Does anyone know what the tall plant is? It slowly dying. The main stem is turning black and the entire plant looks as its melting.

2.5g is doing well. The HC is growing tall. However its growing tall. I am still not sure if this is normal. I been using Fluval 88 CO2 24/7 at 1.5 bps. So far so good.

At least I can now set up the ADA CO2 system on my 10g.
