65G Medium tech dirt tank

I reconfigured my 65 low tech and thought I'd share. This tank had been set up for about 3yrs. Recently it had become a little neglected, so I decided it was time to breath some new life into it.

Old setup:

36x18x24" 65g tank
96 watt PC lighting
AC110 filter
Original Flourite
Malaysian driftwood

Java fern
Crypts
Tiger lotus
anubias

Cardinals
Rummynose
2 Rams
Albino cory
amano shrimp

My plan was to break it down and add Miracle Grow Organic soil under the flourite, rescape and set up diy co2. I don't have any pictures of before I "dirted" it but trust me it was ugly!

I put a fresh bulb in my 96 watt pc fixture, added a 2x T5NO fixture, DIY CO2, watersprite, and Hygro somethingorother Haha

Here it is a couple days after dirting.

Nice! This will work out good for you. The tank in my thread in my sig is basically the same setup only pressurized Co2. 65g might be a bit daunting of a task for DIY Co2 but it should help some just the same.

The dwarf sag is filling in nicely, I started with only 6 plants. I have thinned the water sprite many times, sold some to the LFS.

The first month was great but then I suspected things started to lean out. Nitrates 0, little bit green spot algae etc. I started dosing EI at reduced rate for 40g, things improved. I will keep dosing.

I got a 20lb CO2 tank, cornelius regulator here now. 3 way manifold is in the mail, this tank and my 75g will be going pressurized any day now.

wow those plant additions really made the tank fill out! I love the contrast between the left and right sides too. It's a nice aquascape.

I'm definitely subbing to this thread. Keep up the good work.

What do you have in there fish wise? I see neon tetras. I also think I see a glowlight but I'm not too confident about that.

EDIT: Jk I think what I saw were Rummynose :P Is that a possibility?

Got my 3 way manifold today, no more yeast for me! This tank and my 75 are sipping from a 20lb bottle !!

The crypt roots must have tapped into the dirt, They are now putting out leaves that look NOTHING like the existing ones, dark leathery looking green. It's like a totally different plant.

Probably put up some pics tomorrow.

Trimmed the watersprite and put some in a pot to the left of the driftwood for now. Also trimmed the hygro and moved the clippings to my 75g.

Went pressurized!

Look at the difference dirt substrate and EI dosing does to crypt leaves. Dark green and leathery vs blah.

I had a bit of an GDA attack. Research said leave it alone to complete it's lifecycle then follow up with a huge WC. Well I have been ignoring it, luckily that is easy to do cause this tank is in my unfinished basement. Also took the chance to add 4 otto's from the lfs that were actually healthy! Got six and this is the first time I haven't lost any. They are enjoying the all you can eat buffet.

I think it's been about 2 weeks since I cleaned the glass and GDA is alot less now.

Wow, that's just beautiful. I think I'd lose a few hours each day just staring at the tank if mine looked that good.

Well, I got an XP3 awhile back that is gonna replace the ac110....waiting for it to build bacteria.

GDA is pretty much gone, little bit here and there but at least there is something for the ottos to eat.

Everything looks pretty much the same except the dwarf sag is getting crazy long. I removed a lot 2 weeks ago but guess what, it's back LOL. Waiting for my LFS to get in the Marsilea Hirsuta I asked for that will repalce the sag.
