6g Nano Jungle Naturescape - High Tech, 1 month old

Hello everyone,

This is my first attempt at a true nano tank. I kept planted tanks in my adolescence but never had the funds for co2, rimless tanks, etc so I'm excited for the opportunity to set this tank up. *This is a backlogged version as I didn't take pictures of the setup and have changed it a couple of times before adding wildlife)

Equipment:
6g Waterbox
Eheim Classic 150
Viv glass inflow and outflow lily pipes
Jardli Nano Diffusor
GLA GRO Co2 System w/95g disposable carts (until it's feasible to go get bigger tanks after COVID)
ONF Flat Nano Light

Hardscape/substrate:
Ohko Dragon Stones
Spider wood
ADA Colorado Sand
UNS Controsoil

Plants:
Various Bucephelandra species
Anubias Nana Petite
Anubias Nana "Snow White"
Bolbitis Heudelotii
Christmas Moss
Monte Carlo
Dwarf Hairgrass
Staurogyne Repens
Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini
Crypt Wendtii Green gecko
Tiger lotus
rotala rotundifolia
Cyperus Helferi
Moss balls
Hygrophila Pinnatifida
Red root floaters

Fauna:
10 Crystal Black Shrimp majority SS-SS+ grade
2 Amano Shrimp
3 Black Tiger Badis (1 male, 2 females - story on that below)
1 Chili Rasbora (5 on the way, more on that below)

Water Parameters:
Currently Weekly 20-30% water changes
Ph: 6.4
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate 0ppm
Kh: 2
Gh: 4

Dose Thrive+ 2-3 times per week

The tank was set up April 25th and has undergone some changes since then as I experimented with different looks, trying to match the feel of our apartment (Photos are from oldest to most recent setup, 2nd setup is prior to adding fish and shrimp).

This tank has been fun but challenging to maintain in terms of balance plus finding out how much I truly have to learn. 6 Chili Rasbora and shrimps were added May 16th - got them from Monster Aquarium in Queens. 1 fish looked ill to begin with and was lost during his quarantine but al others were happy. On the first night I made the fatal mistake of forgetting to turn on the airstone (as it wasn't running while I had no fish), waking up to all my fish and shrimp at the surface of the water. All the shrimp survived but I slowly lost every fish except one by May 18th

I was fortunate to win a pair of Black Tiger Badis on Aquabid and they arrived May 24th, however to my surprise they included an extra female! With 5 Chili Rasboras on the way, I'm concerned with overstocking and may set up another 5-7 gallon for the trio.

Algae wasn't present until the last week or so, trying to figure out where the imbalance is but I suspect too much light. Drop Checker is green but lights are on from 10am - 8pm. Co2 comes on an hour before lights do and runs just below 1 bps. Any advice on if adding more rotala/fast-growing plants or lowering photoperiod would help with algae is much appreciated. Also curious about the stocking since ammonia hasn't spiked and parameters are fairly stable.

Very nice scape, feels much bigger than 6 gallons with the way you have it scoped heavy on one side and light on the other

I think moving the badis to another tank might be a good idea and let the chilis roam around.

how are shrimp doing with the badis?

Thank you! I'm considering changing it a little because the plants in the back end up getting blocked by the driftwood and the plant growth there.

I was thinking that as well. They're very calm with the shrimp and don't really pay them any mind. Overall they're shy, especially the 3rd female - the male is kind of a spazz though and freaks out when he gets in the water current haha.

Thanks everyone! Living in New York, there's not much room for anything larger than a 10 gallon so had to make this look bigger. I'm actually going to do a re-scape today to bring the driftwood out of the light path for my rotala in the back left corner as well as clean up any decaying matter to hopefully slow this algae bloom. Best to do all this before the rest of the chili rasbora come in so I don't stress them further.

Found out one of the "females" was actually a less dominant male. Woke up this morning and witnessed him trying to challenge the dominant male, to no avail haha.
