Its Been awhile

Hi, Planted Tanks People!

It has been some time since I've had my last planted tank setup due to moving and other major life events, but hey here I go. I picked up a fluval flex 9 at my LFS for 90 bucks out the door and couldn't help thinking it would look better planted then a reef. I decided I liked the image on the box with its strip of sand neatly and separate plants. I have tried and failed at this look before but its time to try again. This time I started off by cutting and adding a pair of glass strips at 3" tall to make a planter box of sorts. This has always been one of my biggest issues is keeping my sand out of my dirt, I know its not a huge deal but it drives me nuts when they mix.

I know, the scapes that use sand usually have less longevity due to the sand quickly loosing its aesthetic after mixing with the soil. There are some strategies that can be used to ensure they don't mix, but it limits you on what you can do with the scape itself.

Update with substrate and rock in place. I started with a large piece of slate and broke it down to make all my tiny pieces. I'll add pictures of the spider wood I picked up for a tree later.

Took a little longer then planned to add these photos but hope to have some better ones soon. Also looking for advice for adding a second light inside the hood of the flex, I know a lot of people just scrap the hood all together but my wife really likes the all in one clean look of it.

Picked up some plants over the last few days as well couldn't believe that my Petco carries buce plants.

I wish I could find a solution for adding a light inside the hood of my Fluvel Flex as well. The light that comes with it has already gone out in mine after 8 months. I reordered a bulb-- then the remote wouldn't work. Ordered another remote and it wouldn't work. I gave up and ordered a Fluvel Nano light.
But, like your wife, this particular tank look better to me with the hood.
What a pain.
I really do like the tank and filtration though. Its a great little tank--- the lighting situation- not so much.
Your design looks great so far.

Thanks so much I actually added plants over a week ago but have not had the time to post photos of them till now what's crazy is the buce and crypt came from Petco of all places. The java moss, micro swords and Pygmy chain swords are from Twins Aquarium in Stockton Ca(huge shout out to John thre owner who manages to get what ever I need somehow).

Send a message via AIM to monkeyruler90
you may be able to add more LEDs inside the hood

Try looking at RapidLED to see if you can add some LEDs/drivers

I bought the 15-24" Fluval Aquasky, took the old light out, drilled two small holes on each side of the hood and used black zipties to hold the light in place. It sounds sketchy, but it looks really clean.

Unfortunately I have the 9g model and it is not quite 13" inside I ordered a 5050 blue white led bar that is 11" should be arriving Friday. But I did get my first livestock. A pair of wild type endlers! So excited always wanted pure endlers and John at twins got these for me.

Nicrew 12" 5050 white and blue light bar showed up today added it in with the suction cups it came with we will see if they stick if not I'll add a little silicon or superglue under them once I'm sure I like it but it is a decent looking light for being a cheapy. Dimmable and timer model so I can just set and ignore hopefully

Well after my month fishless cycle and 2 weeks with fish(should have mentioned I'm posting these updates a few weeks behind) my green hair algae has exploded with the new lighting. I have dialed back the photo period to 8 hours and have both lights lowered about at 75%. I have built a few diy co2 setups in the past here is my newest one. Hopefully this plus doesing a co2 booster will kill it.

It looks like you're going well with it.
But maybe it's me, but I find half your pictures to be rotated 90 degrees and very distracting. I'm sorry but I can't follow your work.
