Llamafins 30c Journal

After a 3-4 year break from aquariums, I'm back! I wanted to create something similar to my last aquascape (Mr. Aqua 7.5 gallon cube) and bring you guys along for the journey.

Here's where I'm at right now.

Equipment
Aquarium: Hydra Aquatics Pure 7.5 Gallon Starfire (Same dimensions as ADA 30c)
Substrate: Tropica Substrate, Tropica Aqua Soil normal and Powder, Tropica Root Tabs
Hardscape: Mini Landscape Rock (I think Seiryu Stone)
Light: Chihiros A301 Plus
Filtration: Eheim Classic 250 (2213) with Do Aqua Lilypipe
CO2: GLA GRO1 regulator (older version I believe)
Heater: Hydor Inline Heater

Plants
Eleocharis acicularis Ďminií
Staurogyne Repens
Hygrophila Araguaia
Rotala Green
Rotala H'ra

Livestock
Not sure yet, but definitely Amano Shrimp and Snails

Other
Tropica Specialised and Premium Fertilizer
RO Water Remineralized with Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+

Notes
This is my first time using RO water, so any tips for remineralizing is much appreciated. I'm planning to remineralize to a TDS between 130-150 with Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+.

Follow along on Instagram @LlamaFins for more frequent updates!

I've completed the hardscape and just have to wait for my plants to get here. Here's what it looks like and where I want to plant everything. And bonus pic of my previous scape!

Update!

My plants came in from Tropica 2 days ago and I got to planting. I filled it up with remineralized RO water and will be doing water changes every 1-2 days for the first 2 weeks. Lighting period is 6 hours until I see the need to increase it. CO2 comes on 1.5 hours before lights and turns off 1 hour before the lights.

I decided to add another foggy background on the right side to cover up the equipment. I wouldn't have been viewing the tank from that side anyway.

This is my first time using RO water and I have a question. I've read that I should keep my TDS between 130-150, however, the TDS jumps up to over 200 by the end of the day after a water change. I'm assuming this is from the nutrients in the substrate.

Should I just be adding pure RO water while the tank cycles and then start remineralizing when everything settles down?

Here are some updated photos.

1 Week Update!

Itís been 1 week since I planted the 30c and things are looking good so far. I did 3 water changes throughout the week and trimmed out dead leaves.

Right now, Iím remineralizing my RO water with Salty Shrimp GH+ to get a GH of 5. Thatís all Iíve been worrying about.

This next week, I plan to start dosing ferts at a very low level. Iím going to use 1 pump of Tropica Specialised 1-2 times during this week after water changes. Lighting period is still 6 hours but that may increase towards the end of the week.

Any suggestions on stocking? Iíll be getting 2 amano shrimp and a nerite snail to start. Iím thinking of getting some Celestial Pearl Danios but am concerned about how many I can have in this small of a tank.

Here are some updated photos. Iím starting to see roots on the glass which is exciting.

Tank looks great! You could do 4-6 cpds for sure.

Looking forward to watching this progress. As for the CPD's, I have 19 Chili Rasboras in my 7.9.

CPD's get to 1", usually a tad smaller, so you could do more. They prefer to have some shaded spots, so you want want to wait until the tank grows out a bit to add them.

Thanks for the replies, I think that's the way I'm leaning. Unfortunately, all of my local fish stores are closed for the foreseeable future so who knows when I'll be able to stock this tank!

Gives you time to blast CO2 in and really get things nice and pretty before getting the fish. I do this usually for 2 months.

Once things get established, back off on the CO2 to where you need it, and get things ready for your fish.

Time to trim/prune and arrange to get everything just right without disrupting the fish.

2 Week Update

Things have still been going well this past week! *knocks on wood*

I did water changes every third day with 1 pump of Tropica Specialised after each water change. The stems really started to grow in, so I did my first trimming today to give it the shape that I want. I've also increased my lighting period to 6.5 hours.

I've been testing my water parameters everyday and my ammonia has started to decrease and was at .25 ppm before a water change today. My nitrites have now spiked and are at 2 ppm. I'm still relatively new to doing a fishless cycle and was wondering if I needed to add ammonia to keep feeding the bacteria? I'm assuming my soil has now stopped leeching ammonia. Any recommendations on how I should add ammonia?

Anyways, here's a shot before and after the trimming.

Looks great! What about ordering the fish online instead?

That's definitely an option, I'm in contact with a few local hobbyists that may be willing to sell me some shrimp. We'll see!
