5 gallon top fin design/mod/build

Hello everyone, I noticed there was not a lot of love for this cool little tank. There was not much in the way of mods done either besides a few light and a few small filters. So follow along let me know your thoughts

This was supposed to say Top-Fin Retreat but I’m on a mobile device and not sure how to edit this.

This is where I’m at now. Fully recreated canister filter with 3 shelves. Soon integrated Temperature, heat, and flow grills. Next up light mods.

This all started because of the fact that the only filtration this tank has (had), was a medium grade filter floss glued to plastic holding a few grains of carbon. So absolutely nothing!

Not to mention that the filter intake is almost at the very bottom of the tank! So no real useful sand/gravel/soil beds would be high enough to be useful let alone plant much in.

So out of curiosity, I cut the back off the glass cleaned it up and surveyed the situation.

I was finally able to print the lid! This is the second version of the lid considering that, the first lid was just to get the juices flowing and see what something tangible would look like on the tank. Pics in the next post. Some of the things that got me really excited was the fact that I finally got the digital thermometer in that I wanted to somehow implement in the tank. Chomping at the bit some more I just lined up the glass lid where I wanted it and marked out where this was going to go. Next was brute force sawing just for the sheer satisfaction of a mocked up digital thermo. WOOT!

Here’s some pics of the lids that were made and the interesting evolution of the shapes.

Thank you kindly!

Bump: So quick update:

I got to thinking about this build and I believe I picked this up tank up on last Thursday which would have been 01/16/2020 so Im 6 days in as of today! Holy smokes thats a lot of time but...not a lot of time. I'll be honest at this point I've spent most of that time sitting behind my computer modeling everything, I've been itching to get on with the actual build portion of this, and today is looking like the final mock up, and even test so I'm so close.

So at this point I need to:
-finish re-printing the bottom with new fins
-mock it all up and fill the tank
-run the system and test for pressure, leaks, breaks, whoknows, but we'll see
-break-down mockup
-glue everything back together
-aquascape
-automate

This is pretty spiffy! I love 3d printed stuff and I especially love combining it with aquariums. Great work so far! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the aquascape.

Thanks!

I was planning to do a test run however, I completely forgot that I still need to seel the original intake grill in the front.
Let's just say modeling that part really sucks! The curve and all those vents are a PITA!! I'm ordering a caliper. I have been doing this whole build using an architects scale. Totally not the way to go! So it's going to be a few more days until I can finish that out and put some water in this tank.

BTW I was reading that Silicon1 from GE was the one to use, its been a minute since I bought this and can't remember what the correct one was. Can anyone remind me? Also is there a difference between Silicone1 and Silicone1*

Ok here’s an update for you guys. I glued a plate I made to the back of the back. That will block the original inflow for the pump. Then with a bit of ghetto ingenuity I am gluing the back, back into the tank!

The last pic is how it looks all dry and finishing the cure.

That's a creative weight you designed there!
