75 Gallon Low Tech Tank

I wanted to start a journal for a planted tank I am putting together. This will be my first planted tank and I am looking to keep it low tech and easy to maintain.

My build thread will have a little DIY and lots of pics. I plan to also keep a running list of what the tank cost me to help give others a better idea of what starting up a tank can cost (though as well as know the sky is the limit).

I will keep this first post updated with a list of parts used and prices. I look forward to sharing this experience with everyone and learning from all of you.

Supplies Purchased:

Tank: Aqueon 75 Gallon Standard Tank (Dimensions - 48.5" x 18.5" x 21.25") - Glass Canopies and Aqueon LED Light included.
$275

Filter: Fluval FX6
$279

Heaters: Aqueon Pro 200 Watt x 2
$43 for the pair

1 Gallon Seachem Matrix $31
500 ml Seachem Prime $13
250 ml Seachem Purigen $15
Seachem The Bag $9

Carib Sea Sunset Gold Sand (20 lbs) $17
Carib Sea Peace River Gravel (40 lbs) $50

2 pieces driftwood from LFS $50

Stand: DIY
2x6 8ft boards for frame (7 total) $44
1/4" 4x8 sheets of plywood (2 total) $30
Various Trim Pieces $20
Door Hardware $12

Total Cost $890

I got started on my stand yesterday. I follow the guide posted by RocketEngineer over at RC, same as many of you have as well.

I chose to go with 2x6 vs 2x4 as the cost difference was negligible and I was able to find better quality 2x6 boards at my Lowe's than I was 2x4. 3" coated screws used all the way around.

I got the frame done yesterday, plywood skin on, and started my trim. Next steps for this week will be additional trim, build the doors, fill the nail holes and start sanding. Stand will be painted, unsure on color at this time.

Whooeee man, that is a hefty stand. I used 2x3s for my 75 gallon stand. I'm pretty sure you could literally park a house on top of that stand haha

Looking good so far

Haha thanks. Its not as heavy as it looks. I am able to lift it up off the floor and put it up on that plywood work surface on my own.

I wanted it overbuilt to help ensure it doesn't fail. Wife would kill me if i ruined the hardwood floors in our new house.

Minor update, spent some free time last night caulking the bottom of the stand and filling all the nail holes. Should be dry tonight and I will start sanding it down.

Got quite a bit done the last couple of days. Sanded stand with 120 then 220 grit. Vacuumed it off real good then hit it with tack cloth to remove any remaining dust.

Primed with Kilz Premium 3. One coat outside, 2 coats inside.

Built doors for the stand as well, nothing fancy just a basic design using a Kreg jig.

Got the stand painted today. 3 cots of Valspar Signature satin in color Royal Navy. Really nice navy blue color, pics donít do it justice thanks to the orange tint of the sunset here this evening.

Will let the stand dry for the next couple days. In the meantime I will go pickup the tank on Wednesday from my LFS. Will do a leak test Thursday or Friday. Once it passes I will paint the background black and then hope to have everything moved into th who use by Saturday or Sunday.

Picked up the tank this morning, got it unloaded this evening. Started filling it in the garage to do a leak test. Will let it sit over night and drain it in the morning if we are leak free. Next step will be painting the background.

That looks really slick! I am loving on the color.

Would look great with a natural colored substrate and blackly/blue background.

What are your plans for fish?

Thanks! I am really happy with how it turned out as well.

Iím still undecided on substrate, Iím leaning pool filter sand or Carib Sea Sunset Gold sand. Definitely leaning towards a very dark background.

Fish wise Iím still undecided. Iím thinking of a rainbow tank with a few Kuhli Loaches or Coryís. My other though is a community tank with a large school of fish (maybe some form of tetra) and a couple pearl Gourami. This is still pretty up in the air though.
