First planted tank 40g, GROWTH! updated (3/19)

My neighbor and were talking off an on about fish tanks. We both have a history with tropical tanks of different kinds and I mentioned I wanted to setup a planted tank. He had no clue what I was talking about but he was intrigued and said "Here I'll start you off" and he gave me an old 40gallon.

And thus it begins.

The following day I went to a hydro shop and picked up a light.

Today was a trip to Ikea for a bookshelf and a shelf to hold the light... Here it is setup.

I'm off to buy a pump, the substrate and numerous other things this week.

The tank is rimless in the last picture. Did you just take the top plastic trim off the tank?

More pictures! The pump and substrate came in so time to put it all together.

I freaking out a bit though because there seems to be a small leak on the lower seal

And a question. Anyone mess around with any of these pre-packaged plants from Petco??

I would avoid them, most of them aren't actually aquatic plants. The Grass like stuff, the plant with the white or lighter yellow on the outer edge and im guessing the "fern" they sell are not aquatic. The sword plants should grow, but you'll get some die back because they were likely grown emersed in water.
Like your setup so far, looks pretty clean. Can't wait to see the final product.

More updates. Stopped by the LFS picked up a piece of wood, some plants and some flourish.

I added some rocks from the backyard too.

Your off to a great start hoshnasi!
The tall plant you have in your tank is not a aquatic plant, and will eventually melt on you. I too made the same mistake by purchasing that from Petco. It is a called "dracaena".
No need to toss it out though, get some potting soil and a pot and place it near a window .

the plants with the lighter green leaf borders behind the wood and rocks or the small stuff on the left side?

I ask because the tall stuff came from a fish store out of their co2 added planted tank

Yup, Petco does that all across America.

I might be explaining this wrong.

the grassy stuff on the left side is from petco. the tall plant is from an actual fish store. They specialize in both tropical and fresh water. So I'm bummed out about the tall plant. Sucks on both accords though.

The small grassy plant on the left I am not sure about. I am positive about the dracaena though.
Like other have mentioned, Keep your eye out in the swap and shop for some great deals on many many kinds of aquatic plants. (I will be making a package up to part with soon actually...)
