20 gallon high low tech walstad dirted

Greetings fish/shrimp/plant people👋

It's been quite a few years since i did a tank, but i revamped an old 29 gallon for my son for fishes, bought some hornworth and anubias and got the motivation to do another tank.

So here comes the 20 gallon high:

Setup:
20 gallon 24"X12"X16"
Azoo Mignon Filter 360 Aquarium Power Filter

Substrate:
1" Vermicomost or earthworm castings
1.5" CaribSea Eco Complete Black

Lighting:
2 13 watt cfl until I get my
Finnex Stingray Aquarium LED Light 24 Inches in a couple days

The plants:
Foreground
Dwarf hair grass
Staurogyne repens
Hydrocotyle Tripartita Japan

Backdrop
Hygrophila corymbosa
Ludwigia wide leaf
Ludwigia narrow leaf
Alternanthera reineckii Regular and Mini
Crypt wendtii

To add water wisteria later

Attached
Narrow leaf Java fern
Windelof Java fern
Java moss
Anubias nana
Anubias coffeefolia

Floating
Water lettuce

I'm gonna add 3 nerite snails first,
Then cherry shrimp in a week or 2
Eventually whiteclouds and a pleco perhaps

So first I put 1" of the earthworm castings directly, no boiling.
Then capped it off with the eco complete with a little hill to the left, filled and left it for a day.

After which I started the hardscape.
Played around with the driftwood, a rock I found at the beach years ago and knew one day it would come in handy and some driftwood which made a nice cave.

Finally decided on a scape and The Dragon under a tree tank was birthed..haha!

Next the fun part!!
Filled for a day and then drained and planted.

I split up and attached the anubias and java ferns to the rock and driftwood.
I put the java moss behind the dragon's head to look like a mane maybe.
All with superglue.

After which I planted the tank.
I had some room and I added combomba and hornwort in the days after.

Front shot and top shot after first planting. Plenty space to fill in the back. Based on what I've read the best chance with walstad is heavy planting

Update!

So what started as an easy stick some stems in, glue some new anubias on my rock and java fern on the log, and stare at my tank for the night...

...turned into 3 hours of work, uprooted some s.repens, shifted the driftwood, broke my anubias coffeefolia off the driftwood..tried to reglue it and squeezed the entire tube everywhere, now I have white glue base for the anubias..

So I took a little meditation break and finally glued the log section to the rock and fixed the s.repens.....over and over.

I added hornwort, cabomba, hygrophila difformis, a little more haor grass and 3 nerites snails(caught them myself). Shifted the crypts ,, probably bad idea, i don't know yet, but i didnt like where they were at the back.

Finally finished and just looking forward to daily 50% water changes before adding fish hopefully in 2 weeks.

Update...So i rushed and bought fish and shrimp...i know its wrong..tank bit ready.....not fully cycled....i used some filter sponge from my son's tank though.
Gonna get a test kit tom...doing lots of small water changes to combat the lack of proper cycle.
The zebra danios been in 3 days, red cherry shrimp 1 day.
Imma try my best to keep them alive.

All the plants have new growth, replanting the s.repens. its looking good, dwarg hair grass swnding runners. Im hoping for the best as I rushed the inhabitants. Impulse buy.

Very early introduction of shrimp. I honestly hope the pre cycled bacteria help, but that is very quick to add shrimp. They can be so fragile when it comes to instability (new tanks being highly unstable).
I wish you the best, it's looking good!

Thanks.
I'm gonna work extra hard and do small 10-20% water changes twice a day.
I know its not ideal but I already caved.

Remember that quick fluctuations can cause stress. So when doing the water changes, trying to match all parameters as closely as you can. IE, no quick ph changes or temp changes.
Best of luck 🙂

Update:
I did a slow water change last night....added 2 cups every few minuted, about a 20% change....then a smaller one before work this morning.

I got an API testing kit today and both the Ammonia and Nitrite are reading zero. I tested my sons 2 month old tank and it read zero aswell.

So i took my TDS which isball i had past week and it read
254ppm b4 water change and 244 after water change this morning; and still 244ppm when i just tested it tonight.
Tap water is 210ppm btw.

No casualties and everyone is buzzing around as usual.

Is my tank cycled?
