Starting a tank journal here for my 35g corner tank. I want to eventually stock some shrimp and tetras. Exact varieties tbd. Tank is 18” deep, lights are 2x 24” Sunblaster t5HO. Heater is a 300w, filter an aquaclear 70. Not planning on co2.

Planted December 1 2018 into BDBS.
2 Tropica cups of s. Repens, one cup flame moss, one bunch Vallisneria tort, and one more pot I can’t remember right now.
One cup of s. Repens was damaged when I bought it, but I got a good price on it and was told there was a chance it would survive.

December 2 picked up and planted some clippings of some Ludwigia super red 'mini' , Bacopa sp. compact, AR mini from @Quagulator.

December 5. Made up 2 jars of liquid ferts with powders from ThePlantGuy. Macro’s using KNO3, K2SO4, KHP04, DTPA chelated 11% iron. Micro using his micro mix. I will be following the PPS-Pro schedule.

December 6. Water tests
Ph 8, Ammonia 8ppm, Nitrite 0.25ppm, Nitrate 0ppm. I did a 50%~ water change, ammonia is down to 2-3ppm.
New growth leaves showing on Ludwigia clippings.
Discount s. Repens is dead. Other plants are showing the expected melting.

Following along! Hopefully all the clipping I gave you pull through and grow well for you. They are all doing well in my low tech tank, so they should do well for you!

December 7. Ammonia high again. Did a 25% water change, and also re-did my hardscape. First occupant has been seen in the tank. I’m not quite sure where he came from, but my girlfriend has named him Greg.
December 8. Woke up to see 7 plus snails. Added two assassin snails.

It’s kind of fun seeing how many I can find, any they can really only help with the cycling. I figured I’d end up with some at some point, so one or two assassins were on my list

Dec 10. I have Nitrates!! Less than 5ppm, but still more than 0.

Dec 12. Nitrates are growing! 80ppm today.
One assassin snail dead, I can’t find the other. I’m chalking this up to the tank not being cycled, and will add another pair when it is.

I would get that nitrate and nitrite down by half.

I wonder where the ammonia is coming from....

Dec 15. Ammonia 0.25 ppm, Nitrite 5ppm, Nitrate 10ppm. I think yesterday I must have put in extra drops, or not cleaned the tube well enough.
Dec 16. Ph 7.6, ammonia 0.25, Nitrite 5 ppm, Nitrate 10 ppm.
Dec 17. Ph 7.6, ammonia 0.25, Nitrate 2-5 ppm, Nitrate 10 ppm.

I must have messed up a test or something. I got a good amount of dead leaves while changing water, and the ammonia has been stable for a few days at 0.25ppm

Back from Christmas trips a few days ago. Had the cat sitter dose micro and macro ferts, prime, and a pinch of fish food per day while away. Came back to 0 ammonia, 5ppm nitrites, and high nitrates. After a day with no fish food or prime the nitrites dropped, and after a big water change levels were all clear. Added 7x neon tetra’s, 1x Bristlenose pleco, and 4 assassin snails. I’m guessing we have well over 100 pond snails, so the assassins should remove more bioload than they contribute. After two days with the new stock the ammonia and Nitrite are both around 0, and the nitrates are 10-20 ppm.
