My best attempts and fails at Planted aquariums

My in-laws' neighbor was getting rid of their 29gallon tank and randomly asked if I wanted it... I said sure. A few months later my brother came over, who has 4 or 5 tanks, and was frustrated with my lack of starting the tank and so I took my first steps into fish keeping on 11/26/2017.

I got lucky with some good looking drift wood from a LFS and some random rocks. Plants were an amazon sword that was melting and some anubias. Substrate was black fine gravel from petsmart and light is and was a beamswork DA FSPEC 30 inch, that came in a few days later via amazon along with a heater and an aquaclear HOB filter.

I was impatient with the fish-less cycle so I added some tiger barbs and did frequent water changes.

(#2 image) Which lasted me until my next photographic update : January 2018 - by now I had acquired a few female bettas from my brother's sorority tank and some hand me down plants, and some bought plants (red lily on left, wisteria, java moss on front left wood, and telanthera on right). I had also added an air pump and some bubbles!

(#3)By January 23rd 2018, I had made more trips to the plant store and also added snails. I got some spiral val in the back right but it would slowly die back and never returned. Also Java Fern that I buried in the substrate ( I was noob) but this is the same java fern I have now that has really taken off.

(#4) 2/6/18: plants have taken off, but clearly some deficiencies going on, but still nice

Plants looking much better, have added various new fish but also made the mistake of adding a freshwater prawn that killed all my betas and some others... he was such a pain to catch and remove, he had grown considerably. So I added more fish: corydoras, Blue velvet shrimps (bought 5)

3/4/18: Added pearl gouramis, and attempted to plant dwarf hair grass... this was a fail, apparently my tiger barbs did not agree with my placement of them as they would tear them out of the substrate constantly... I eventually lost all of the dwarf hair grass. I was able to keep my blue shrimps in the community tank with some great success.

4/25/18: cryptocoryne wendtii red added, wisteria being slowly trimmed back and away with the idea of the growing out the rotala (started with one small stem of this and eventually would get much more all from that one stem and planting its trimmings). Added more fish: apisto cacatuoides, BN pleco, bolivian ram was added at some point prior as well.

June 2018: I have lost photos but I took out some of the substrate and added in some eco complete. I also took out the left side amazon sword and gave it way, also removed the wisteria. Filter changed out, the 2 HOB aquaclear and some other one, for Fluval 306 canister and started to run CO2.

October 2018, first fry! Apisto pair but none survived.

November 2018, one year late!! I have decided to upgrade everything. Bought a Seaclear 50g rectangle tank, fluval 3.0 planted LED, and new stand. Stand is up and put the 29g on it. rest to follow in December.

Bump:

Bump: 11/23/18: My tank as it is before upgrade. My DIY CO2 reactor and my current set up under the new aquarium stand.

To transfer tank from old stand to new stand, I took the top of the old stand off with the aquarium still on it and lifted it over to new stand (so tank is currently on top of the top of the old stand ). Huge pain in the butt, not worth it at all but I could not help myself
