40 Gallon Breeder (Low Tech)

I've been lurking around here for a couple of months, checking out everybody's journals, so I figured I better add my own. I've actually had this tank up and running for a few months now and have a journal on my local site (bcaquaria) but this site seems to be more active so I'll share here as well.

Equipment
40 gallon breeder tank
Ebo Jager 250 W heater
Eheim Pro II 2026 Filter
Coralife 96 W PC Fixture (11,000 K bulb)

It's now fully stocked with plants and fish, so here are the final lists:

Fish

8 x Corydoras sterbai

8 x Otocinclus sp.

12 x Hemigrammus bleheri
4 x Apistogramma cacatuoides (1 male, 2 female)

4 x Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

Plants
Eleocharis acicularis "mini"

Pogostemon helferi

Cryptocoyne wendtii Bronze "Tropica"

Heteranthera zosterifolia

Rotala wallichii

Staurogyne repens

Alternanthera reineckii red "mini"

Nymphaea zenkeri
Rotala “Vietnam”
Marsilea crenata

And the first few pics.

Water in, starting the cycle, and weighing down some driftwood to get it waterlogged.

Threw in some Ludwigia while I was waiting for the cycle and for my plant order.

Plants!! Ordered from Theplantguy in Winnipeg, MB. Plants in great shape, except the AR mini didn't look super happy.

Everything planted but dust yet to settle.

Bump: August 13, 2018

First fish in the tank! Added 4 C. sterbai.

August 18, 2018

Added 6 Otocinclus.

Really like the look of the tank, especially the sticks!

How are your corys doing with the gravel? It looks a little large and sharp

Thanks! I forgot to mention the substrate, it's Seachem Fluorite "Dark". Somebody else asked about it on the other forum, too, and I haven't had any issues so far. No notable injuries on their barbels or skin (no losses either), and I've had them in there for a few months now.

Awesome! Looks great. I wish I had the wisdom to go with apistos rather than German rams. They’re great fish but keeping more than one pair is annoying with all the chasing.

haha, funny that you should say that, because.....

October 30, 2018

Added a couple more each of rummynose tetras, C sterbai and Otocinclus over the past couple weeks to bring my numbers 12, 8 and 8. Finally, added 4 German blue rams (all female) and am finished with fish stocking. They all seem to be getting along together and with the Apistos fine.

and, most up-to-date FTS I have:

Keep an eye on the rams. As they settle, even females might start chasing and harassing each other. Mine do.

Oh wow, I've always wanted to try apistos. This'll look fantastic once the plants are a bit bushier

Quick update on my tank, with some pics from last week:

November 28

FTS, things starting to fill in:

Right Side

Left Side

P helferi starting to look bushy

As is the Staurogyne...

But the carpets of E acicularis mini and Marsilea are growing painfully slow, as is the typical downfall of low-tech/co2-less tanks

Very nice tank. I am surprised you grew all those nice plants with no co2. Keep up the good work

Small update from last week:

December 5, 2018

I wanted to change up the left side of the scape, and felt like I needed some more dark green and something with bigger leaves. Threw in a small chunk of driftwood with some Anubias, and I hadn't ever had Bucephalandra before as it was not as big last time I had a planted tank (~10 years ago or so) so added some of that to the log.

A shot of the plants and wood outside of the tank after attaching the plants.

And some pics of it in its spot in the tank.
