Bazzar's 30g Low Tech Adventure

It's time to start a new chapter in my Aquarium keeping saga.

But first a little about my aquarium keeping history.

I kept a few fish only freshwater tanks when I was younger, a 29g and a 55g, with some success.
For the past 4-5 years I'd been keeping Saltwater Reef's starting with a 30g, followed by a 125g and ending with a 180g Display and 40g breeder frag/grow-out system.
Due to some unfortunate circumstances I had to shut down the reefs about a year ago, but missed the joy the hobby brought me every day.
Since there's work to the house that needs to be done before I can jump back in to the Saltwater side of things, I decided to try something new.

Now I have always wanted to try my hand at a planted aquarium, I just got so wrapped up in the salty side that I never took the time to try.
But that's about to change, The 30g that started my journey into reefing will once again be reborn as my first planted tank!

The Equipment

30 gallon 36" x 12" x 16" tall tank with the back painted black.
DIY Stand and canopy I built for it.
Substrate is about 60lbs of BDBS making for a 2"-3" depth.
Lighting will be a single 39w t5 retrofit, no reflector and will be using a TruLumen Flora bulb to start.
Filtration is via a Eheim Pro4+ 250.
Heater is a Eheim Jager 100w in DIY inline reactor.
Will also be using a ReefKeeper Lite to control the heater, light, filtration and monitor temperature.
Water is from my RO/DI system that was originally used for the reefs.

I decided to start with a EI based system
Micros: CSM+B
Macros: KNO3, KH2PO4
Along with CAS04, MGS04 and K2CO3 to remineralize the RO water.

Now I've always had a hard time sticking to "just a few" of anything...
So my initial plant order will consist of the following:

2 -2x2 Micranthemum Tweedie
8 -Staurogyne Repens
6 -Rotala Rotundifolia
6 - ludwigia x lacustris.
4 -Bacopa Caroliniana.
4 -Hottonia Palustris.
1/2 bag Red Root Floaters
5 -Sagittaria subulata true form
6 -Pogostemon quadrifolius
2 -Wendtii Brown
3 -Eriocaulon Vietnam
6 -Bacopa colorata
6 -Rotala hra
2 - ludwigia repens x arcuata
4 -Limnophila Sp. Dwarf Bonsai
4 -Rotala True Indica Bonsai
1 -Microsorum Thunder Leaf

As for Fish i'm still undecided to be honest, any input would be welcome as far as they go.
I do already have a QT setup for the fish once I do decide though.

The tank was officially filled with the remineralized water 9/21/2018

Pictures will be incoming a little later as soon as I figure out how to post them.
If theirs any other info that I missed that you'd like to know about just ask and I will do my best to answer.

Thanks for stopping in and taking the time to join me.
I hope you enjoy the show.

Plants have been ordered, should be shipping Monday.
I do seem to have a bit of a Bacterial Bloom starting which surprises me a little.
From what I have read about the bloom it should have no adverse effect on the new plants.
I did go ahead and adjust the spray bar up to increase surface agitation a bit more.
Guess it's just part of the process.

Good luck with your setup! I look forward to seeing how it turns out. Very nice job on the stand / canopy BTW.

That is a huge plant list too... Should give you a very heavily planted layout.

For fish, I've always loved having activity at all levels of the tank. A group of smaller schoolers and a group of corydoras catfish or loaches might be a good choice. Some schoolers to look into: rummynose tetras, harlequin or espie rasboras, or dwarf neon blue rainbows (praecox). For cories, sterbei, pandas, skunks, or any of the others that strike your fancy. Groups of 6+ for cories (the more the better) and for the schooling fish, I'd say 8+. A good peaceful "centerpiece" fish for this size tank would be a pearl gourami or maybe a Bolivian ram.

Current tanks: 5gl and 10gl planted low-tech tanks
Currently keeping: 12 snakes (ball pythons, boas, KSB, Carpet, and BRB), 6 geckos in planted vivariums (crested, garg, and leachie), and one BTS
