3g Bowl (NO filter, NO CO2, NO heater)

It's been a few years since I've posted anything, but I recently got back into the hobby! I'll spare the life story details and get right into this journal.

Hardware
3g glass bowl - Amazon link
Desk Lamp - HomeDepot link

Substrate
Miracle Grow Organic Potting Soil - HomeDepot link
Play sand

Flora
Cryptocoryne wendtii
Cryptocoryne undulata
Valisneria asiatica
Anubias nangi

Fauna
5x Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi (Black neon tetra)

I started by sifting the potting soil with 1/4" wire screens to get any large debris out. I also washed the play sand to remove dust.

Are you planning on running a filter?

This looks like an excellent start. I am getting ready to do the same thing with a 3 gallon open circular bowl I bought at my LFS. I also have a 8g Walstad. I don't sift my organic soil or mineral it by baking it. It did produce tannins in the water for a couple of months. I had good plant growth right out the gate but noticed slower growth right around the 3 month mark. Pretty sure the soil is just inert at this point.

Good luck with the bowl!

I added NPK and Micros to the soil before capping with sand. I have a lot of ferts leftover from when I was dry dosing my 100g.

Gorgeous tank! Probably a tad small for the tetras though...have you thought about any of these instead?
- a small group of heterandria Formosa, elassoma sp (needs live food) or leptolucania sp (needs live or frozen food)
- shrimp
- A pair of one of many of the smaller nothobranchine or rivuline killifishes (would need a lid of some kind; some are picky eaters)

Beyond that, great tank! Hope it continues to develop well I wish my tanks were this pretty

Yeah, I have only had the tetras for a month now and they are getting bigger than I thought, so I might trade them in for something smaller. I never really got into Killifishes. I really enjoy Corydoras pygmaeus, but finding a LFS with them in stock might be a problem.

Looking good, if a tad small for black neons.
3-5 Endlers might be another option and they can do without a heater.

Updates! In early 2019 I removed the Vallisneria and planted some Eleocharis acicularis.

February 2019

March 2019

June 2019

September 2019
I added some Corydoras pygmaeus, and removed the Anubias to allow the Crypts to take over.

January 2020

Updated Flora/Fauna list:
Flora
Cryptocoryne undulata
Cryptocoryne wendtii
Eleocharis acicularis
Rotala sp. H'ra

Fauna
1 x Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi (Black neon tetra)
2 x Puntius titteya (Cherry barb)

If anyone was interested, here are 4 pictures of the bowl with a 90 degree rotation between each picture. It's tough to pick a "front" to the bowl so we usually rotate it once and a while to give a different perspective.

Added 6 Cherry shrimp. I mowed down all the plants back in June to give the fish some swimming room. Everything is growing back nicely!
