120 Native Wisconsin Planted

I have a start on a new setup in a 120-gallon that will feature native Wisconsin plants and fish. This will be a fully-aquatic tank, not a riparium.

I will add more detail with specifications to this first post later. I just wanted to get a journal thread started before I forgot again.

I was working on the tank today and got some nice fish into it.

...more later.

This is going to be good. I can hardly wait to see what the wilds of Wisconsin will provide! If anything, I think it will help illustrate just how diverse a native tank can truly be.

"You are much better off with no numbers than meaningless ones. The minute you believe numbers uncritically, that is, without understanding how they're calculated and how well they measure whatever they're supposed to measure, you will generate a breed of employee who will produce numbers and not results. Your data-processing system will then serve not to describe reality but to lie about it."

This is a dream my dad has had for awhile for when he retires. I'll show him this, but I can say we'll surely want pics

Yesterday I was over again working on this setup. I planted a few new selections in the tank...
  • Sagittaria platyphylla
  • Isoetes lacustris
  • Vallisneria nana

For now I am just using plants that are more or less representative for Wisconsin. I believe that I. lacustris (if that is indeed the Isoetes that I have) is native to Wisconsin.

Vallisneria americana is also a WI native plant.

Also, check out this link as it may come in handy to you.

The lakes around the Madison area are full of V. americana.

There used to be lots of other plants in these lakes, but V. americana is one that still does OK in the degraded conditions.
