upgrade 10g

After looking at some of the tanks here I really want to upgrade my fish tank.
The gravel I have in my tank is the regular gravel mixed with blue gravel.
Here are the specs on my tank:

Equipment-10 gallon tank with 5-15 gallon filter with hood.

Light- 1 25 and 1 15 watt tubular

fish- a bunch of guppies and 1 rainbow shark

plants- a bulb package i got from lfs with 1 root plant

c02- right now i have a small diy

Do I need fertilizer? I really don't like the gravel I was thinking about Eco complete but that's a bit too expensive, maybe some day. Any cheap alternatives?
By the way, how do I add pics?

Bulb plants will do well in the beginning without outside fertilization because they feed off of the bulb. But eventually they need ferts also.

Easiest way to add ferts is to push some Root Tablets into the bottom of the tank, 4-6 would be enough for a 10g and should last 6 months to a year. People with huge tanks sometimes think root tablets are too expensive and find alternatives like osmocotes but for a 10g I don't the $6 a year in root tabs is going to break anyone.

To my knowledge the easiest way to add pics would be to get a free account at imageshack or photobucket and upload the pics to the free account and then put the pic links you get from there to the planted tank.

Weather you need ferts depends on your light, water and plants.

My favorite set up that gave me great growth was:
1st layer red bag kitty litter from Wall-mart.
2nd layer Scott's top soil with potassium sulfate, calcium sulfate and organic charcoal
3rd layer river sand

I added ferts in soil for my tap water has very low minerals. The organic charcoal has to be crushed. Made easier by soaking over night. The top soil I had to sift the mulch out. Read that True Value hardware store has a brand with very little mulch. Now instead of organic charcoal trying laterite. Next time getting the organic charcoal, which I got at ACE hardware store. If your ph is high sphagnum moss in dirt helps balance it.

If you decide to get root tabs, my favorite is API. Get them here for cheapest and no shipment cost.

I want to make some serous changes to this tank.
Do you think that maybe I should go get a bigger tank at Petco for the 1$ for 1gallon sale?
