Planted Discus 180 Build Underway !

This will be a slow build but finally got the ball rolling. Already have the tank with Reef Ready overflows, a 40 Gallon Breeder and baffles should be cut tomorrow for that. I have some various equipment that I'm waiting at, but have some things I'm still waiting on.

I'm bound to make mistakes, so follow along and learn from me

What I have

Tank
Sump
Heater Controller
Lights
ATO
65 Gallon container that hold water change and topoff water
Fluval FX6
Dual Stage co2 regulator and tank
Reactor

On Order

Fluval SP4
2 x 500w Heater from Jehmco

Need to Get

Loads of Plumbing
Various media for sump

This is the stand progress so far, my Dad was my helper until his Nascar racing came on then he disappeared

Great start! That stand will be plenty strong - I use the same design for my 135 reef tank.

Look forward to seeing your progress.

More stand updates ....

Still need to do some rounding on door edges and sanding followed by staining. Will be using a waterproof coating in stand and also inside the canopy.

Your tank stand looks great. 1 suggestion if I may, add at least 1 more hinge (even 2 would be better) to each door. You will likely have some door sag happening over time with only 2 hinges and that width of the 2 doors.

Some more progress pics. Stand still needs sanding, conditioned and stained. While waiting to get sandpaper I started on sump. Had to make a little jig to hold the cross baffle in place while the silicone dried. I will clean up the silicone tomorrow and run a water test to see if it works the way I expect.

This is looking awesome!

Is that a sump and a canister filter? How is that going to work?

Yes, both a sump and canister. They will work independently of each other. I may or may not use the canister. The sump will be fed by dual Herbie drain system and water returned via a Fluval spring pump also feeding a cow reactor. The fx6 will just have it's plumbing cone over the back.

Now, here is the reason for the canister. We had bought it for the 75g but decided to upgrade to the 180g before installing it. We have horrible water pressure and a python gravel vac barely works. My father saw the Fluval vac attachment somewhere and liked it so that is why we have a canister in this setup. I'm half hoping it doesn't work well so I can eliminate the canister

Here is the sump running. Couple little pinhole leaks that don't affect anything, but bother me enough they need to be fixed

What a mess getting pine to take stain. I had read about it and thought it can't be that bad. Had to end up putting 3 coats of stain down to finally get it looking right and that was after putting the wood conditioner on. Just put first coat of poly on the doors and will do a minimum of one more coat after sanding, possibly 2.

Color is Onyx.
