My 50Gal Planted Journey

edit: Upgraded to a larger tank.
I'm upgrading my 10g 20Long to a 20g long 200L. This is my first attempt at a planted tank and I am going low tech.

Here's my plan so far:
Aqueon 20L 200L (48x15x17)
SunSun 603B Filter carried over from the 10g Eheim Pro4 250
Beamsworks DA FSPEC 20" (hanging 8" above the water) carried over from the 10g Finnex Planted+ 24/7 CC
Aqueon 100w heater carried over from the 10g Hydor Inline
Black Diamond Blasting Sand
DIY Root tabs
DIY stand

Inhabitants:
7 GloFish (5 Danio & 2 Tetra) carried over from the 10g
10 RCS moved to a dedicated shrimp tank
2 Bristlenose Plecos
5 Khuli Loaches

Plants:
Dwarf Lily
Rotala Rotundifolia
Rotala H ra aka "Gia Lai"
Rotala Colorata
Rotala Yao Yai
Rotala Enie
Ludwigia brevipes
Myrio Red
Anubias

My plan is to start on the stand this weekend. I will keep this updated as I progress.

Very cool!

I just ordered a DA FSPEC for my 24 inch deep 40 gallon with co2.... I think you will need to put that light on a dimmer as you start and slowly ramp it up if you you want to avoid algae problems are going low tech. At 8" above you may be ok though. Anyone else chime in!

I lucked upon a Finnex 24/7 plus CC so now Iíll be able to reduce the output to better suit my low tech setup.

In other news: I planted and filled the tank today. Iíve been running the new filter in parallel with the HOB on my 10g for the last 3.5 weeks so I wouldnít need to wait for the 20g to cycle.

I need a few more tall plants for the background but I happy with the initial layout.

Just wondering- do you have kids in the house? I have always thought a small tank would look very nice in this corner spot by the staircase- similar location- but am too afraid of rambunctious kids on the stairs causing an accident...

I have 2 kids in elementary school and it's not been a problem. They actually like getting in there an helping with water changes, etc.

You'll be very pleased with the 24/7 CC, I sure am!

I'm really liking the transitions. Just need to dial in the sunrise/sunset/moonlight color setting more to my liking.

First attempt @ Low Tech Planted

Things seem to be going well. I started dosing Thrive twice weekly, added a couple more plants (hygrophila something and I canít remember the other name). This red plants seems happy as you can see it sent out a runner just behind it.

I also added 14 RCS which my danios and tetras promptly ate 7 and chased one out of the tank. A week later and theyíre finally starting to come out of hiding during the day.

very nice! I do love the placement of the tank and 2oL in general. i'll be fallowing along on your journey.

I was thinking og going with the 24/7 for my up and coming 40br but read I would need 2 :/ bummer as they looked like great lights I am sure they will rock a 20L

how many capsules of the Osomote+ did you use to start with? I am going the same route.

I do love the 24/7 and the slow transitions between red/amber sunrises to bright daylight to blue moonlight.

As for Osmocote+, I started by sprinkling the beads loosely over the bottom of the tank before pouring in the substrate to kick things off. As the months pass then I'll start inserting home made Osmocote capsules.

Two updates:

1. I added a dwarf gourami to the community.
2. I picked up a bundle of ~25 random trimmings from a member on here. 3/4 of them went in this tank and the remaining went in the 10g shrimp tank thatís currently cycling.

Iím starting to dislike the way the java fern looks in thus tank.

Also, my dwarf lily is taking off and tripled in size.

Itís been 3 weeks since my last update. Things are really taking off.
The java has been moved to my 10g as it didnít really work with the other plants. My stems are taking off and have been cut and replanted a few times already.
sdwindansea and sdwindansea like this.
