Caton's 20g high-ish tech tank. *TERRIBLE SUPRISE! NOOOO!*

Hello! I am starting this journal, even though there have been different fish through out the year. The tank has been set-up since around last year. I might change out the filter...but I don't want to spend that much money on the tank unless I have to. I plan on getting pressurized co2 and this tank would be my "test" tank that holds my plants until I have space for them, trimmings, even testing out the light I want to get for my 75g. Until yesterday, the fish in the tank were 5 Lamprologus brevis, but I brought them to the LFS and got 7 (was eight, one died within thirty minutes of being bagged up, but the rest survived the 4 hour car drive) cardinal tetra, and two apistogramma cacatuoides "double flame" (pair). Here is the run-down of the stocking, planning flora, and equipment.

Stocking:
  • Pair Apistogramma cacatuoides "double red"
  • 7 cardinal tetra
  • 6 sterbai cories (went with kuhli loaches instead)
  • 6 Khuli loaches* (I guess they don't eat snails...I am having a hard time finding a bottom dweller)
  • 6 Chain Loaches (Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki)
  • Couple of Otocinclus, maybe 4 or 5*

*Fish that have yet to be purchased

Flora (planned):
  • Mexican Oak Leaf (Shinnersia rivularis)
  • Blyxa Japicona
  • Hygro Polysperma (a leaf fell off when I took it all out, it rooted and is
  • now two plants, hardy plants)
  • Hygrophila sp. 'tiger'
  • Ricca fluitans (maybe...I might use it because I already have some and love it...but it might not go with the scape)
  • Glosso or HC...maybe DHG "belem"
  • Cabomba furcata
  • Alternanthera reineckii
  • Rotala sp. 'Singapore'
  • Polygonum sp. 'Sao Paolo'
  • Vallisneria spiralis (Might go into a different tank)
  • Aaaand whatever else catches my eye. I need at least one tank that is my collectoris tank.

Equipment:
  • "Foster & Smith Aquatics Bio System Power Filter & Oxy Surface Skimmer" rated to 55g, I am not using the skimmer.
  • Current USA T5HO 2x bulb (48w total)
  • In time, I will get pressurized CO2, but that is EXPENSIVE! I mean like $200 for a system.
  • I got some driftwood coming that I traded for some RCS.
  • Aquaeon 100w heater

I think I might get a sun sun filter as my first canister, but I don't want to spend money to buy it :P I am uber poor and this is more of a "make a mistake here than in the real thing" kind of tank so I can have my 75g go up without a hitch. I might also switch of the tank itself because the silicone on the inside seems a little old. I am also using 80% r/o water.

Pictures!

FTS with my sad little water sprites. I am ordering the light on monday.

HOORAY for snails! You should try selling some of those on the Swap and Shop, lol! Seems like quite a few people have been interested in those pests snails lately to feed puffers (etc).

Looks good caton. I'm usually not a fan of rock walls like that, but it looks great in your tank and i'm sure the apistos love swimming in and out of the caves!

Looking good Caton. You moms got a sense of humor at least. Holy MTS. Have you looked into pygmy chain loaches? IME ponds and rams will explode, then die back to tolerable proportions. MTS just seem to keep going and going. Looks nice tho, cant wait until you get more plants in it.

I think all the snails are out because I just changed at once from a pH of 8.2 to r/o water. I think I might get loaches instead now that you mention it...I like the look of them. I have no adult MTS, only juvie's, so the population has slowed, but it is still growing. I will ask my LFS to get some instead of the cories.

They do a good job. Yoyos do as well, and get slightly larger, but are way cheaper. They will also eat shrimps but so will the Mr. and Mrs.

I could just add some assassin snails instead and keep my old stocking...

Yes, I know I am taking that out of context :P
This tank is hopefully going to be dutch like, that rockwall is left-over from when I had the tanganyikan shellies. I have a single assassin snail... It needs to do its job :P I might even get a some riparium plants, not going to lower the water level at all, but just have some plants.

Very nice. I like the rockwork a lot. But holy cow that is a lot of MTS! From what I know, assasins can not take out MTS, because there shells are to hard.

lol at the "streakers"!

I have seen the assassin eat quite a few snails, they don't eat the shells, from what I see, he suck's out the "meat". Should be getting the kuhli loaches on the 7th of January. You DO NOT want me to take a picture right now (lights out for an hour)...all the snails are out, what you saw is only half or 1/3 of them....

HTML is kinda cool..like it makes sense, but just takes forever to write. BBcode is a lot easier. I think I might add some RCS to this tank.

l like the look, very natural imo. Excellent choice of rock too. Do you think the rcs will be fine with the apisto?

If the RCS get eaten it will be fine, the Apisto gets food and my RCS...well...I see no good side for them.

I will get 6 chain loaches (Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki) instead of the kuhli's because I hear they don't eat MTS.

Also, in sad news, after I went skiing all day (It was a blast) I was told by my parents that one of the cardinals died. I watched it earlier and it was separated from the other streakers. My parents said it got trapped behind the rocks so I just left it for the snails to eat...I think it will be fine...I just hope more don't die.
