Starting my 75 gallon!

I have been fish keeping for a year now, stuck with simple plants and mainly focused on my breeding skills (angelfish, blue rams, zebra danios, neon tetras, blue gouramis, platies, guppies, ghost shrimp, etc.) But I have been waiting for the chance to make a gorgeous planted tank, and i got my hands on my buddies 75 gallon tank with stand for $40 last month! That was my calling to start getting all the pieces to setup a planted tank. SO I started light, substrate, fertilizer, uv sterilizer, etc shopping like crazy. Got everything i needed and placed my order for the plants and they are arriving tomorrow from fedex one day shipping

Equipment/Supplies
75 gallon tall (48x15x24)
4 bulb T5 HO w/ Led Moonlight
2x 54W T5 HO lamps 10000K
2x 54W T5 HO lamps Actinic Blue
2x 55 Gallon HOB's
2x 200 watt heaters
In Tank UV Sterilizer
DIY CO2 with two liter bottles
Planted tank nutrient rich substrate (black)
Kent Fertilizers (liquid)
Fertilizer sticks (like the tabs, you stick them into the root areas)

Plants
Dwarf Hairgrass
Java Fern
Anubias Nana
Rotala Indica
Temple (Narrow Leaf)

I will be putting it together tomorrow if i have time.. stupid calculus and chem exams before thanksgiving! lol

I will post pictures of it when i set it up, then more as it matures.

Hopefully it turns out decently!

Welcome to TPT! This looks like a nice set-up. You might consider replacing the actinic bulbs that came with your fixture since they are really for marine set-ups and give a weird blue color to the tank, or you could just use the 2 10000K bulbs, probably don't need much more light than that.

Welcome to TPT!

I agree you'll want to replace the actinics in your fixture. Personally, I'd go with some pink bulbs or 6700k bulbs to balance out the white of your 10k bulbs. Any bulbs in the 5000-10,000 k range will work, though.

I hope you're planning on suspending your light fixture up over the tank? I don't think you're going to be able to achieve consistent CO2 levels just using DIY CO2 on this size tank, so you'll need to really moderate your light levels. Even running just 2 of the T5HOs will put you in the moderate to high light range... suspending them a foot or two above the tank could help quite a bit.

I hate calc too, and chem is okay but I like bio more, that's why I'm majoring in biochemistry with a focus in molecular and cellular biology.

I have my exam on finding volume of curves rotated around an axis in a few hours. Ugh

I'll do that idea with using the two 10000k bulbs for sure, I only planned on using two bulbs since I'm going to be wanting discus in the tank and I read that they don't like INTENSE lighting do to their natural habitat.

I read somewhere that blue light makes plants grow shorter and bushier while pink/red makes them grow taller? Or am I misinformed lol

the tank is clearing up alot, i popped a big piece of sponge on the intake of one of my HOB's so itll help filter out all the cloudiness from the substrate.

Also, im already seeing growth

AND I added all my fish back into the tank, it was refilled with the water from the original tank and using the same mature filter media. So it was ready for fish

Stocked with
5 white angelfish
20 Neon Tetra
1 Cardinal Tetra (he was the only one left at the store.. i felt bad.. so i grabbed him and he hangs out with all the neons just fine ;D)
7 Zebra Danio
1 Leopard Danio (again.. only one left at the store.. lol)
3 Julii Cory
3 Bronze Cory
