Cool DSM on the Paradise Island of Mauritius

Hello aquarists,

First time posting here.
I'm trying the Dry Start Method experimenting outdoor using sunlight in a Tropical Island - Mauritius.

The aim is to create a thick carpet with nice depth without sloping with substrate

Tank capacity - 10 gallons
Tank Size - 60cm x 27cm x 27cm
Plants - Dwarf Hairgrass Parvula and Glosso
Substrate - Mix of 30% Garden soil, 60% coco peat, 10% beach sea sand.

I will Cap the substrate with a layer of black moon sand once the plants start spreading as the coco peat tends to float.

The final plant will be dwarf vals at the back to give more depth. But this plant doesn't tolerate DSM. So will wait to the end.

Thanks for sharing! I would level out your substrate or remove some water until you donít have any water standing above substrate level. You want it just below the surface, otherwise you could get mold and other problems.

Thanks for the tips geektom.
I started having blue green algae on the substrate because of the excess water.

Update after 2 weeks of adaptation. Capped the substrate with black moon sand to contrast the greens and give a less muddy look to the whole set up.

Bump: Close up.
The hairgrass parvula seems to grow much faster in these conditions.
Note it's in partially shaded area with 3 hours of direct tropical sunlight and we are in the summer here.

Bump: Notice that I actually dig a small hole in the substrate at the back so that I could remove excess water with a syringe.

Once the plants have fully cover the foreground, I will proceed to flood the whole tank and add vallisneria nana behind of the hairgrass
