Chuck's Paludarium Build Thread

Hey everyone, new to the forum but I figured I'd post up my plans for my next project. I've been keeping aquariums and reptiles for years now and decided to combine the two. When the store I work for put up a showcase for sale for $10 I couldn't pass it up. The top area is about 3ft by 3ft by 3ft. I want to build a shallow aquarium within the top and build a planted island with a waterfall in the center of this. I'll be taking this slow so it may take awhile to finish.

Haha yeah, I saw it and the idea popped into my head and I jumped on the opportunity. The bottom has a storage area and both sections have large locking doors. I plan on running a center overflow down to a sump in the bottom for filtration purposes.

nice deal, so its just a glass box at this point? ie it is not at all water tight? How are you planning to add a water tight compartment to the bottom?

Yes it is, I plan on just building my own shallow tank either glass or acrylic and sliding it right in. In the bottom of the stand will just be a standard tank, probably a 20h, for all filtration purposes.

so what size tank are you going to create, roughly the 3' L x 3' W by 1 or 2 feet tall? is the "box" open in the back or are one of the sides hinged?

I'm gonna do roughly 3x3x1, so about 65g. The front has a full size locking door.

So I have a question for all you paludorium experts. Should I take out the glass top and do a full screen top or take the front glass out and do a screen door or maybe half glass half screen door? Any input would be great.

What's going in it? I think that will help you decide whether to use glass or screen. If you go with the screen, it will be harder to keep the humidity up.

As far as top or front, I think that will depend on where you're going to be reaching to do any work to maintain the tank.
