I've been a lurker on the forum for a while and decided I wanted to share the evolution of my 40 gallon breeder. I originally bought it during $1/gallon sale in 2012 to breed cichlids but found that it make a good format for a planted tank. I've been trying to keep it as low tech as possible so its mostly just low light plants.
Tank: 40 gallon breeder (Marineland or Aqueon I can't remember)
Filter: Eheim 2217 + Big ole sponge filter
Substrate: Black gravel with root tabs
Lighting: 2x Coralife T5NO 4x 6700k bulbs
Ferts: Add excel when I need to control algae blooms
Hardscape: Tree stump from a park. Unknown species but has been in my tanks for 10+ years. River rock.
Plants: Java Fern, Java Moss, Anubias, Crypt Balansae, Dwarf Sag (maybe reg I don't know), Amazon Sword, Water Sprite, Narrow Leaf Java Fern.
Fauna: 7 Montezuma swordtails (Capuchin location), 1 Velvet swordtail, 4 Otos, and a couple snails that hitched a ride on a plant.
9-27-14 Tank stayed like this until switching to gravel.
1-17-17 Switched to black gravel. Added UV filter for bacteria bloom. Kept a few plants.
3-23-17 Added sponge filter, dwarf sag, floated water sprite, and some slate.
4-10-17 Added river rock, removed slate, planted some water sprite from original floater, stuck a clump of java moss on driftwood which I laid down, and narrow leaf (maybe) java fern.
5-3-17 Added another piece of driftwood and anubias from quarantine tank.
6-5-17 Removed driftwood to try and remove white fuzz. Bad idea as it took over more aggressive. Just gonna leave it alone.
7-12-17 Added driftwood back. Trying to maybe cover that piece with moss or make it a mini tree. Removed water sprite but left some floating.
