Going Bigger

I am going to combine three 55 gal tanks into one stand. I got a deal on the stand from a breeding system tear down. I plan on running the 3 tanks off of a 55 gal sump(same setup), also to make it into a cabinet so it looks good sitting in the Livingroom.

Iím looking for some help on a few things like pump and plumbing layout ideas. Any input will be appreciated. Iíve had single tanks but never linked them together.

Currently, I am out of the country so just in the planning stage. Making sure I have all of the equipment planned out before I start moving tanks around the house. Iíll definitely update as I go and be asking for opinions along the way.

Attached are some quick mockups I made in Sketchup.

List of things to do:

Cabinet
  • Add adjustable feet to level stand
  • Cover stand in plywood
  • Magnetic door panels
Tanks
  • Clean and redesign sump
  • Paint tank backs
  • Foam mats/plywood bottoms
Plumbing
  • Design overflows
  • Return line design
  • Cerges Reactor or not
Lighting
  • Hang lighting
  • Make Arduino light controller (Need more Satellite LEDs)
  • Sump lighting w/auto switch

Question Head Calculation

My first big question is finding the proper calculation for having multiple outlets? I've read a lot of information and some say you have to take into account the horizontal and some say no. I plan on putting valves before each return to regulate flow for each tank.

The calculation I have come up with is about 15 feet. That's a 5ft lift to the top with 3 tees, a few elbows and about 17 feet of 1in pipe total. Does that seem about right to plan a pump size off of?

That's a really cool rack/stand, can't wait to see what you manage to do with it.

Yea when I saw it for sale I thought it would be different and could finally get all my tanks in one location.

Anyone have any comments on my head height question? I'm really trying to narrow down what pump I need.
