40 Breeder Budget Build

I couldn't resist Petco's dollar per gallon sale so I picked up a 40 breeder. My plans were to build a nice display tank for my room. I've always liked the river style look of scapes, therefore, I decided to start my tank off as a south American biotope for some appistogramas. I looked everywhere but its tough finding a decent stand for a 40 breeder, so I decided to just build one and detail it as I go. The filter is an old eheim I thought was broken but was rather having priming issues and needed a new seal. I got the manzanita piece from craigslist for cheap. And the stones I collected around from a local lake.

Subscribed. I'll likely be getting a 40_B this weekend, so I look forward to see what you'll do with yours.

the beginning of the tanks scape

Bump: the stand's cost was $15. I couldn't find anything decent for a 40 breeder so I'm just gonna build it myself I still have to add the side panels and add some shelves

Bump: I took down my 10 gallon shrimp tank to rescape so I threw all my java fern in here and hair algae is taking over due to the strong light I added some diffusers to the light and it toned down the growth of algae. I don't mind some algae just because it adds a naturalistic effect on the tank but too much and its unpleasant.

Bump:

I did a water change today and again pulled out a lot of hair algae. I think my window blinds leak some glare in the mornings so rather than buy new blinds for now I added a black background. I don't really like backgrounds and that's usually because I like tanks that can have solid scapes on both front and back sort of as a room divider tank that's just as pleasant on one side as the other, but for this tank I don't think ill be moving it anywhere

some update pictures. The java fern is growing pretty fast. I'm gonna upgrade the light next and finish up my hardscape.

I did some maintenance today on the tank and the filters. In the process I lost my Eheim strainer. I bought some cheap lily pipes on eBay to replace the intake. I'm considering cutting the pertruding driftwood down to allow my light more coverage.

I upgraded the light to the finnex planted + 247. I'm gonna start working on the canopy next and finish up the stand. I have to trim down that driftwood first tho haha. I picked up a couple more ferns too to calm my patience lol. I'm really considering replacing my substrate. I added a couple steel blue apistogrammas so far they aren't too aggressive and wont mess with the shrimp

Looking good. I like your substrate! It has a nice contrast to the darker colours at the back.

Absolutely love your scape, and I agree on the substrate. Looking good!

Too many tanks, never enough plants...

I also like your substrate. I like the Driftwood coming out of the top of the tank too. Could you ever pull off a suspended light so you can leave it open topped?

I debated a lot about trimming the driftwood off and finally decided to do it because it doesn't allow for a canopy. I got my lily pipes in today finally because my eheim filter has been running slow due to the sponge clogging up every day. Also I picked up some supplies for my stand. I like the sand too but Iwould really like a glosso or sp japan carpet in the front and from my research sand is not a good substrate for root feeders. Heres some pictures of this weeks progress. More will come soon.
