New Build for the holidays

So its a new tank for the holidays

After long debate I finally decided to start a new build. I picked up a used Acrylic tank for a decent price. Got 2 Eheim filters with it as well. Needless to say the tank needed some work and filters needed heavy cleaning. Both the intake and out pipes were clogged with algae. The tank itself had a few scratches and needed to be buffered out.

Tank Dimensions

48 X 18 x 18
Acrylic Tank

Substrate

3 bags Power Sand
4 bags Amazonia Soil

Wood

2 medium pieces

Rock

20lbs Dragon Rock

Filtration

Ehiem 2217

Pretty good list of supplies so far.

What type of layout are you planning?

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome. Its been a pretty slow build so far and I got a lot to do to get the tank ready to where I want it. Still have to do a bit of sanding and polishing.

In the meantime onto some pics of the filtration and substrate as we know you guys all love pics.

That's a pretty awesome piece of wood there, and I do love Ohko/dragon stone (I just cleaned out a local place here that was having a sale, haha). Looks like you could make a pretty cool rocky hillside with a tree if you felt so inclined. The angle of that wood in Layout #1 looks just like a tree trunk with branches stretching out.

Not too happy with the layout but still have time to come up with something. In the meantime I did some dirty work.

Onto the sanding 800, 1000, 2000 and then 3000

Some tape was stuck on the back as you can see the left pic and hard to get rid of so sanded down the area. Will finish the last bits tomorrow.

Its been a slow build so far. Sanded the aquarium down and now on to the polishing. Will finish this tomorrow and have the tank ready for the layout.

Hi Mike.

Planning on going with a light called chihiros led. I'm using it on my small 10gal with great results.

I like the 2nd layout more by the way. But maybe you could use more wood as it still feels a bit sparse.

quite a slow build so far. Been down with the Man Flu so haven't had the time like i would to work on this.

Soaking the wood for a week now.

In the meantime I am experimenting with a dry start using a tupperware. Feel free to check my other post on this.

A quick update for now.

So the build has not been that good so far and it's taken far too long. I've had my challenges along the way.

The first challenge was that we were going to move soon and I wanted to know how to move this as as easily as possible without having to disturb any of the soil. The move was not far, but carrying a 4 foot tank would not easy by an means considering I had almost 4 bags of soil into the tank already. So the solution was to keep everything as it is and move them on dollys to the truck.

Since the tank was acrylic I presumed that it would handle the stress better. The stand is aluminium so carrying the tank on the stand would ensure that the weight is distributed evenly across the bottom.

Day of the move everything went well except for a bit of soil movement around the aquarium. Once in the new place I checked the tank for any signs of damaged and it seemed all good. My first thought was to flood the tank soon to make sure that there is no leak.

A week later I did do that and everything seemed good. Sigh of relief ! Connected the CO2 and the filter and let it run its course.

I will post some pics of the update shortly.

The algae is now gone after doing the 1-2 punch method.

Tank is looking much better after the H2O
