Fluval Edge 12G - First tank ever.

Hello all,

So I've always wanted a tank, never seemed like the right time for one though due to parents, money, time, space or a combination of the above.
But finally my time has come
I do want a larger tank (in the 100G range or so), but having just bought a house and an engagement ring for my girlfriend, that project will have to be postponed a bit, hopefully not too long.
However with it being my birthday recently, I was able to get a smaller tank at least, something to hold me over until the bigger one.
Went with the Edge mostly for it's design, as it is in my office/computer room.

Anyway I set it up on Friday night, right after picking it and some plants etc up from the store.

Here's what I got so far:

Substrate: ADA aquasoil amazonia
Hardscape: Ohko/Dragon stone and a piece of driftwood
Plants: - Java Moss
- Elodea Crispus
- Cryptocoryne Balansae
- Alternanthera Rosaefolia
- Lilaeopsis brasiliensis (I think)

I'm using diy co2 on this tank, as well as ferts, which has made the plants grow quite a bit, even in just a few days. The Elodea in particular has gained like an inch a day, wasn't expecting that

So yeah, currently cycling (fishless), though the temptation to get some fish or inverts is strong. It seems to be going well, as I've seen an increase in nitrates today, though checking again about 12 ours later it seemed to have lowered (no water change), which has left me a bit stumped, maybe the plants consumed some of it?

Anyway, looking forward to posting more as I go along

Looks great! My first tank was nowhere near that successful, I really like the hard scape and plant choice. Though, in the future, don't be afraid to more substrate, especially in the back of the aquarium. It helps add additional depth and scale for smaller setups. From my experience, the nitrate test tends to have a much greater margin of error than the other tests, so that could possibly account for some of the decrease; however, it does seem reasonable that the plants could have consumed it. Can't wait to see some livestock in there!

And yesss, the more pics, the better.

How I feel about non-planted aquariums.

Thanks I did try to slope the tank more, but planting without proper tools and through the small opening of the edge did end up leveling it somewhat. Perhaps I'll try to rectify it a bit once the plants have rooted more.
The weird thing is testing today, having just bought the ammonia test I was missing, all the readings are very low (ammonia and nitrates), just the nitrites at 0.05 . Now amazonia is supposed to leech ammonia at first, in my understanding, so that surprised me.

Figured I'd post some pictures to illustrate the growth, quite happy with how it is going.
The crypts are melting slightly, but that's to be expected from what I've read.
Anyway, here's two pictures, first one was taken after first setting up the tank, second one was taken tonight, all in all about 5 1/2 days ago.
Oh, also added some Monte Carlo in the foreground, forgot to mention that in my original post.
