Caton's medium tech 10g

This is my first planted tank, I plan on having the dwarf baby tears spread to give a carpet, the crypts in the backround and the anubias as a centerpiece plant. All the other plants (other than the java fern) I got for free since they hitch-hiked with the other plants.

Stocking includes:

5 ember tetra
2 (one male, one female) threadfin rainbows
5 shrimp (4 females, 1 one male)
Lots of MTS
Some pond snails
One Neritina snail
__________________________________________________ _____________

Plants:
"Corkscrew" Val (Now gone)
Anubias barteri 'coffeefolia'
Java fern (now gone)
Ludwiga repens
Pearl Grass (now gone)
Green Wendtii Crypt
Java moss

__________________________________________________ ____________

Lighting: two 15w lights
Substrate: All black flourite sand
Ferts: Seachem flourish
C02: DIY yeast
Filter: Duetto 100
Heater: Tetra 100w

Male shrimp

Peek-a-boo (female shrimp)

One of my snails hard at work

Some of my ember tetras

One of my two threadfin rainbows

Full tank shot

Now you may be thinking: Wow that tank is ugly. Which is true, just wait for the end-ish result...

Scape 2 looks maybe a little better, BUUUTTTT not really:

April 4th, 2010 (I know same day, really wanted to re-scape...)
Little better...maybe not...

April 6th, 2010
Scape 3: Little dusty from re-scape but getting better:

My thread fin died in this time, probably from the stress of coming to a new tank, and all the re-scaping.

April 7th, 2010 (I like to scape my plants every day :P
Replaced white rocks for darker ones, now I have a tower in the middle of the tank

April 9th, 2010
Ahh...much cleaner now...

April 12th, 2010

May 3rd, 2010

3 days ago also I gassed eveything in the tank with c02, everything lived, I just gotta get a regulator for the DIY reactor.

I have taken out all of the java ferns in the rocks as I didnt like them, and I have taken out more java moss from the "cave" but I am too lazy to snap a picture right now.

I really like the ludwiga repens in the back, it has been cut in two now and planted again...

My micro sword isn't doing so hot, any suggestions?

Regards,
Caton

P.S. Much more is to come...

Swords don't like to be moved very much. Try to keep them in one place so they can establish some roots.

Can't wait to see when it fills in. Agreed with tuffgong though, scaping is better done sparingly for the health of your plants then every day. I rearrange and prune every week with my water change, even though my greedy scissors and tweezers want to get in there every day when I come up with an idea for my stem plants. Swords REALLY don't do well being moved alot. find a place in the foreground that you like and keep them there for at least a month, and once there established, you can prune and move.

Okay, I think I might replace the swords with dwarf hair grass, or Echinodorus tenellus, however E. tenellus wont give me the grassy or smooth look I want to go for. Also I added some frogbit to the tank, and some plants that I cant remember the name of. I will try and get pictures of that now.

EDIT: Just saw that you are from spokane...ever go to the best LFS in the world (barbie's shop)?

Thank you for all the kind comments.

I got some new plants, I cant quite remember the names... Rotala rotundifolia I think, along with some form of hygro...

Tank shot:

Ember tetra, with the algae covered anubias in the background:

Baby shrimp on the rock, dont know if you can see it:

I got some frogbit.

I think I might just have the DIY c02 on once a week.

Sorry, didn't see you comment ridethesprial. There is Ricca in the netting.

My Ricca is no longer looking like a diaper:

A shrimp with lots of eggs

I think this is a really colorful male, but it could be a female very easily

Green!

A random picture of a chia pet that I picked up at goodwill for $3, my brother suggested putting some moss of ricca on a chia pet, interesting idea if it had a hold in the back for hiding and you want a lame "blue gravel" type of tank.

I picked this up at a thrift store in Ohio, you put a candle in it and it lights up and looks cool. I figured I needed some type of fish decoration besides my aquariums.

Got this knife in Amish country, it was lazer engraved by a Mennonite (the Mennonites and Amish "hang out" with each other, just the Mennonites use electricity).

I think once the plants in the back grow in it will look nice.

Okay, so I did some re-arranging with the rocks, moved the ricca. I know this may sound weird, but I wish it grew faster, then it will cover up the screening completely and I can start a new carpet in my other 20g WCMM tank. Any way, I got lots of blyxa today from BaltimoreGuy who RAOK'ed a ton of it. Thanks BaltimoreGuy!

Anywho, here are some pictures! It is starting to looks nice! I hope the blyxa grows a little taller. It is still a little cloudy as I planted the blyxa not 5 mins before taking the picture. Oh, and one more thing; I sold all the dwarf sag and got glosso, hopefully, it will grow into a nice carpet.
FTS

Zoom-out with 20g WCMM next to it. And yes, that is a 4ft shop light.

Some of the blyxa melted during transit, I think most of it will perk back up though.

I am going to do a water-change today. I know the water level is low on both tanks.
