10 to 20l upgrade

I've been bitten by the dreaded "MTS" bug, and decided I needed a shrimp tank. (With the wife's approval.) So out we went, my wife, 3yo, 2yo, 2mo, and me to get the supplies. We got a 10 gallon tank, 2 5.5" dome reflectors, some 13 watt 6500k cfls, spray paint and a sponge filter. Needless to say after 2 stores and me trying to look for what I needed (wanted), the kids got fussy and it wad time to head home. But once the kids were fed I started working on painting the things that needed painting.

Next it was off to the local tractor supply to get some BDBS and the rock yard to get rocks. After washing everything it was time to play and find a hardscape layout that I liked. I'll save you all the boring pics of the different options and just show what "we" decided on. I also stuck the sponge in the canister on my other tank to start seeding it.

So after running the tank with some bleach water for a couple days (no sponge on the filter just air) and then super primed water for a couple more days (all in the garage). It was finally time to drain the tank and move it inside. My bedroom looked like a wonderful spot so there it went. Refilled with more primed water and I stole some plants out of my 65 gallon tank to start with. Also pulled the sponge out of my canister and put it in. Also had my wonderful wife help me center the lights on the tank and does aprox 2ppm of ammonia. I'll also save you the boringness of filling the tank. Plants are, unknown sword, cabomba purple, weeping moss, marsilea crenata, and some wisteria. I'll probably add some more but it was time to quit for the night.

I'm really impressed with the aesthetics. Your setup is sharp. Do you think that your lighting will be sufficient at that distance above the tank? I love how it looks but I'm wondering about the par value.

I had to lower the lights as the new leaves on my wisteria had almost no lobes. Also my 3 year old decided to play in the tank today. Walked in to this

You better buy some guppies so you can figure out where kids come from, while you still have money left. :P
Have a chat with the 3 year old though, that tank could kill him if it falls over and shatters. I have a barely 4 year old ballerina in the house.

Lovely rocks, a shame about the blue foam though.

Wish I could get a local supply of those aluminium shades.

Cape Town, South Africa.

Hi. I'm back.

So my talk with my son went pretty good. Apparently he played in the tank because he wanted a drink. Luckily he settled for the cup of water that was sitting in front and didn't drink the tank water.

Well I never got around to getting any shrimp. But I did get a new tank. Replaced the 10 with a 20l and went dirted with a black diamond cap. Also thanks to klibs for an awsome raok. Also got a 30" finnex 24/7 to sit on top. Here are some pics of the progression of the 10 and some of the 20l with how it sits tonight.

Not yet. I want to make sure I don't get an ammonia spike from the dirt. Then I will start stocking. Having a hard time making up my mind.

Well I had some time to run some tests today and it's a good thing there is no livestick.
Ph: 7.2
Ammonia: .5
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 40
Phosphate: off the charts.
Time to get some water ready and do a water change to get the nitrate and phosphate down.
