55 revival

Hey everyone,

I've decided to set up my 55. It has been in storage for 7 years, so I figured it's about time to do something with it. I built the oak stand myself and resealed the tank. I've always wanted a planted tank, but have never had much success with live plants. Now that I have done my research (thanks to this helpful site), I am ready to plant.

The setup is as follows:

plantedaquariums black diamond substrate
penn plax cascase 700 canister filter
4 x 32w T-8 6500K lighting
DIY Co2 with glass bubble counter/diffuser
Penguin 550 powerhead with pre-filter (for use overnight to add O2)
300w heater

I will be adding the following plants:

Brazilian Pennywort
Ludwigia Peruensis
Crypt Lutea
Moneywort
Dwarf Hairgrass
Java Fern
Java Moss
Four Leaf Clover
Limnophila
Walkerii Crypt
Micro Sword
Corckscrew Vals

Attached are some pics of the hardscaping. The plants should be arriving next Thursday, so your comments and suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks for your inspiration!

nice build on the stand/canopy, looks great. i think larger rocks may be better. these smaller ones will get lost once there are plants in..

Nice canopy build! I think the driftwood at that angle looks a little unnatural. But it could be me!

Thanks guys.. I had no choice but to build the stand because I needed it to be only 16" tall so the tank could fit under the overhang, and still give me enough space to reach into the tank. It wasn't that hard to build, but I did use a compound miter saw and a table saw for the doors.

I do have a few questions..

1.) how long should I leave the lights on given the plants I am getting? I will be runnng 2.33w/g. I have been reading that people are running anywhere between 7 and 10 hrs/day. I'm sure there's some kind of formula based on the type of plants and w/gal.

2.) Should I keep the carbon insert in my cansiter filter? I heard that it's OK to keep it in there to help clear out the water, but then pull it in a couple weeks before stocking the fish. I will be running DIY CO2, will the carbon filter the CO2 out?

3.) I was planning on running a powerhead w/venturi aeration at night on a timer, without disconnecting the DIY CO2. Is that even necessary?

4.) What do you guys think of the substrate? I was trying to make it look as natural as possible.

The plants are scheduled to arrive Thursday (I'm so excited!!) I will play around with the driftwood arangement 'till then, but the wood is oddly shaped, and this may be the only way to stand it up.... unless I lay it flat. I will also work on getting larger stones.

Its been a little while since I posted an update. The tank has been planted for 2 weeks now. The plants are starting to take off. I added 5 guppies and 2 ottos yesterday to cycle the tank.

Comments are appreciated.
