HOB Replacement

I just got the Nicrew ClassicLED for my 20L and I'm loving it b/c my plants are no longer dying. HOWEVER I've now run into a space issue with this new led and my current Marieland Penguin 150 filter. I cant hang it on the back b/c the back portion of my aquarium is underneath a cabinet so right now its hanging on the front. NO WAY in hell am I going to keep in this way.

So I was looking at either internal filter or sponge filter. If I choose sponge filter would I be able to connect it to a submersible powerhead or do I have to use an air pump? I really dont want to do air pumps b/c of the added noise they produce. My bio load is small enough to where I dont mind the space that a sponge filter or internal filter would take up.
