i just bought (at Duc's insistence) some DIY blue "floss" at the LFS. i cut apart the penguin filter and dumped the carbon out. then i placed a newly cut piece of the stuff over the plastic "frame" but i didn't anchor it. finally, i slipped it into the hob filter.

i checked on it, and the floss is staying in place. so, it's cheaper than the store bought and it recycles what you have and there is no carbon. win-win-win!
