What should I look for in a testing kit

After years without, we're setting up a small tank and getting a little back into it. I'd like to use it as an opportunity to teach my kids a little about water chemistry (and chemistry in general, I guess) so I want to get more of a test kit than I had before--which was just pH.

At this point, I'm not really serious, I just need something that will do the job and not cost a lot. I looked online and saw so many options I couldn't decide what was good, what bad, and what was awesome but not worth the money. Most likely I would have walked into Petco or some local aquarium shop (don't really even know them yet) and bought something that looked OK and claimed to be able to test pH, Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates. Will I be fine with whatever they have, is there something I should look for, avoid, or be aware of? I'm also open to specific recommendations, and willing to order online if that's the way to go.

Most fresh water people have the API kit. It is cheap and cover the basic, PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate
If you are going high tech then you will eventually add GH&KH and may be Phosphate

Thanks, I'll watch for that one. I think I've seen it when I googled; glad to know ubiquity didn't mean it was junk.
