What does iron do for plants?

Hey guys.
I have had a 20 gallon planted tank for about 2 years now. I don't have any "hard plants" in that tank just an ozelot sword, dwarf sag, and red jungle val. I am running 2 bulbs a 5000k 100 watt cfl and a 5000k 64 watt cfl. As for substrate, I have eco complete and Iuse osmocote root tabs. I run no co2, but I have 0 algae. Here is my problem. Ever since about 4 months ago, my plants just stopped growing. The dwarf sag I replanted in another part of the aquarium is still green but has not spread. Same with the jungle val. So, I have come to a conclusion. I need co2 or i need some iron. SO, heres my question what does iron do for the plants and will it improve my situation.
THANKS!

Chlorosis of new leaves. No chlorosis? No iron deficiency.

I'm curious as to how you decided that out of the 3 macros and myriad micros, iron was the missing nutrient?

I'm guessing that when you say 100w and 64w cfl's, you mean 23w and 14-ish watt?

Before messing around with adding new nutrients, I would suggest you investigate the existing parameters. Like latchdan suggested, how old are the bulbs? Also, when was the last time you put in root tabs?

CO2 definitely won't hurt, but if you've gotten by without it, then something else has changed.

Possible micronutrient toxicity. Pics would help.
