Where to start?

I've been combing through this forum for about two weeks now. I've got a ton of really helpful tips and information to help me get started.

I have the tank, filters, light and substrate. I purchased my co2 equipment. I've got approximately 40 lbs of petrified wood for the hardscape. I'm currently trying to get that all figured out for asthetics.

What I feel I'm missing is a real understanding of what I need for fertilization of my future plants.

I see lots of dosing regimens and calculators, but what I feel I'm missing is a basic primer to water plant fertilization.

For instance.... what are the basic items I should be starting out with?
Why are these items important to my tank?

When I was doing reef tanks I actually felt like these things were more cut and dry. You start with super clean water and add what you need for the coral to grow.

I'm seeing so many references to so many different dosing methods, that I feel a bit confused as to where to start.

Is there an article that lays out basic principles and supplies for planted tank fertilization?

I think this may be what you are looking for.

The shortest distance between any two points is a straight line...in the opposite direction...
