How much magnesium?

Hello,

A while back I called the water company in my town to ask for water parameters. I was told that total hardness was 98 ppm and calcium hardness was 67 ppm. I did find an explanation on the web on how to calculate the amount of magnesium but I'm not sure if its correct or if I did it correctly.

98 ppm - 67 ppm = 31 ppm magnesium hardness.

31 ppm / 4.1 = 7.56 ppm magnesium

I don't understand the difference between magnesium hardness vs. magnesium in the water. I'm not sure why they described dividing by 4.1 either.

My objective is to determine if my water provides sufficient magnesium in ratio to the calcium that is in the water. I'm also thinking that my water is soft at 5.488 GDH.

Any advise from folks with chemistry skills would be appreciated.

Regards,

Henry

Magnesium doesn't need to be in any particular ratio to calcium, it just has to be present in significant amounts. And, you have that, in my opinion. Some water contains virtually no magnesium, so people with water like that do need to dose magnesium. If you aren't sure there is any in the water, then dosing some is also a good idea, but I'm not sure what the appropriate amount is. Someone who does know will likely step up and tell us. (I suspect you can find that with a search, too.)

My gut feeling is that there should be enough magnesium since there is plenty of granite around here and a gh of about 5.6. I did try a search but so far not successful.

It's more to satisfy curiousity and often I read posts that get rather detailed, I figured I could get input from a chemistry guru.

I have learned quite a bit from your posts in the last two years by the way. Thanks very much for that.
