Metricide

To be sure I get the right one.

I order the Metricide 14? looks like per the reviews on Amazon but wanted to double check before I order.

Also, I saved a thread where I was told to use less than Excel, but I read a review that said someone doses the same. I read reviews on the 28 and 14 - I think maybe the 28 contains soap? There were aquarium reviews on that one too.

thanks!

Yes Metricide 14 is the right one. Metricide 14 is stronger than Excel. It contains 2.6% glutaraldehyde compared to Excel at 1.8% so dose accordingly. Around 60% of a normal excel dose should be fine...

As you probably read from the reviews do not use the activator that comes with the metricide, just throw it away.

Also be very careful with the stuff. Don't breath it in and try not to let it touch your skin.

fwiw, I buffer my glut down at a ratio of 100ml glut to 70ml distilled water. You could do 65ml distilled to be closer to excel ratio.

Difference between the 28 and 14 is the activator, which we throw away anyways.

do you mix it as you go or make a batch? I've been double dosing my excel lately. Ordering it now.

I mix it when I run out. Not sure if it makes a difference. But I do shake it well before each dose.

I found it on ebay for 20.99 free shipping for a gallon. Thought that was fair enough. I pay $12 I think for a small Excel from Amazon including shipping.

Definitely worth it since you'll be mixing about half with distilled water, you'll get two gallons out of it, for that price. Can't go wrong.

So if I mix the 100ml water/70 ml metricide then do I dose the amount I would use with Excel?

I use 500ml containers so it works out to 288ml of glut & 212ml of RO/DI. Then you can dose as per excel instructions.

I don't mix my Metricide with anything before dosing it. It is far less trouble and it uses the same amount of Metricide, if you just dose less of it per dose. But, since we can dose Excel at 1 to 5 ml per 10 gallons without harming plants other than those sensitive to Excel, I just dose 2 ml of Metricide per 10 gallons. That is working out very well for me.

+1
This is what I do. It's SO much easier to just dose it straight.

+1 For unnecessary mixing. Just determine your amount and roll with it.
