Excel, H2O2 and the good bacteria

So I did the one-two punch and am now dosing Excel.

But it got me thinking..if this is a disinfectant, what is it doing to my good bacteria???

It has to be taking it out as well right?

Just about every chemical on the planet can be useful or toxic depending in the dosage. Glutaraldehyde is an effective disinfectant at 0.1% or higher. In contrast the recommended daily dose of Excel results in an in-tank concentration of 0.00005% which is 2000-fold lower.

But still, strong enough dose to halt algae, must be strong enough to damage bacteria.

You cannot say that - it depends entirely on the mechanism of the toxicity. As a disinfectant, glutaraldehyde works by crosslinking proteins, but as a substrate for photosynthetic pathways it might play an entirely different role with different toxic effects.

I hope you don't think I'm trying argue, just thinking through this in my own head.
Lets just talk bacteria
But if Glut is used to disinfect/kill bacteria how does it know the difference between the good guys and the bad guys?

I told you, it is a matter of concentration. At the concentration we use in our tanks - 2000-fold less than when used as a disinfectant - it doesn't kill ANY bacteria.

The fact that it helps control some specific types of algae is a completely separate issue.
