RO water question

I've never used RO water before and just got some from my lfs. My question is this - do I still need to add water conditioners when using RO water?

Why are you adding R O? And short answer is no you don't need to condition it.

I have very hard water and I'm trying to raise CRS and CBS in one of my tanks.

Sympathies on the water I completely understand. Ive gone full blown 6 stage R O with a 105g storage tank. Water here is like a rock, I don't even mix any back just build it with dry chem. Another option, I don't know what the LFS is charging or what distilled is going for in your area. Distilled works great for knocking down hardness too. Used it here for nearly a year before building my system.
I thought paying for water was expensive before I put in my system. LOL now I have 6 tanks.

I'm near the Chicago area and the water here is very hard and has a high pH. My tetras couldn't handle it and started dying off one by one. I was mixing R/O with tap water, but still couldn't get my pH to drop (moderately planted tank with CO2 and lots of driftwood, pH still at 8.6). So, I've gone to straight R/O water with RO right.

RO water is pretty much water at it's purest, definitely no chlorine/chloramines in it. So, no need for conditioners

I got my RO water for 50 cents a gallon. I've checked several stores and they all sell it for that price. I do not know if that is expensive or not, but for me, that is cheap. I live in the burbs of chicago and my tap water has a 7.4 ph and gh and kh is pretty high. I have tried distilled water but that only dropped the hardness alittle bit. I had started out with 20+ of each kind of shrimp and am down to 2 of the red and 4 of the blacks. So I'm trying RO water. If they start flurishing then I will invest in a RO unit. But for now, I'll get it from the lfs. I have the shrimps in a 10 gal and spending $1.50 - $2.50 a week on water for the tank isn't all that much.

Your parameters sound very similar to mine. If you dont have ADA AS Ammazonia then I believe that is all you would need to have a successful shrimp colony. With the sybstrate you dont need to try and tweek your paramaters. Everything is very stable.
