I have no experience with a canister style filter, so I'm not sure about the priming aspect. This is my first sump style set up, before this tank it was always HOBs. I am fairly certain you are correct on the first statement though, magnets drive the pump impellers. At least that seems to be true for the Rio. There does not seem to be any additional noise or vibration when the pump starts back up after the feed cycle, so I cant really see how any detrimental damage is being done.

150g Tall, low tech (for now?) New to the plant world

I think you still need a coil (or several) in there....
I would be more concerned about various surges in other equipment - my pH meter always 'burps' when I turn off a motor on its power board....
