only the parts with no plants, wheni feel like it.

If in doubt, add more plants!

My not-enough-plants-but-not-enough-space-to-put-anymore-so-will-start-going-up-box-of-water.

I dont disturb the substrate, but I skim over the entire surface in between plants every wc. Also vacuum any carpets, which can collect a lot of mulm. They always seem to appreciate a good cleaning and fluffing.

Loew's has clear plastic hose in lots of sizes. I got one that I thought was correct for my 10g tanks and skim the surface as I change water. But I let some of the detrius stay there as it eventually becomes ferts.

BTW: the way your question is worded, I clicked on it intending to say.."You would actually let someone besides yourself get anywhere near your planted tank/w a vac ?" LOL...

The shortest distance between any two points is a straight line...in the opposite direction...
